Caleb Howard Obituary

HOWARD, Caleb Mark
August 24, 1980 - December 22, 2023

Family and friends mourn the death of Caleb.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Keith and Nell Howard enthusiastically welcomed Caleb into the family on September 15, 1980.

Caleb died of a toxic drug overdose at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. Although he and the family bore the impact of decades of drug abuse, at his core, he was intelligent, creative and compassionate, with interests in reading, visual art and music. He was a deeply spiritual person who held together the traditions of his Cree/Sioux Ancestry, the United Church of Canada, the Anglican Church of Canada and the Native American Church.

The many who grieve him include Nell, Keith (Gaye), sisters Sara (John), Christie (Craig), Robin (Blake) and Megan, aunt Beverly Foster plus nieces and nephews.

Donations in his memory may be made to Qom Qem Coastal Connections, an Indigenous Harm Reduction and Health Services organization where Caleb offered peer support (designated Caleb - QomQem).

A Service of Celebration will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Sands Funeral Chapel - Victoria, 1803 Quadra Street.

I'm so saddened to read about losing Caleb, and for not attending the service in his memory. I enjoyed being with Caleb when he visited church, and we had a special lunch together one day to meet an inspirational Cree friend of mine. May his spirit be free and he rest in peace.

My encounter with Caleb was brief in the fall of 2023. We spent time sitting outside, on a few sunny days, discussing many a topic. Such a wise, gentle, caring and polite man. His love for his family was immense. He was proud of his heritage and shared his ways openly. Rest Peacefully now dear Caleb. My heartfelt condolences.

First, my sincere condolences to Caleb's parents, Nell & Keith and his sisters,
Sara & Christie and his immediate family. Sadly, I can relate as I lost my
partner from similar circumstances & Fentanyl OD in 2017. Treasure all the
memories of this wonderful sweet, intelligent & gentle person. Robert Thompson.

So glad I saw Caleb a few months ago and had the chance to catch up a bit. He was such a sweet, intelligent, gentle person. We bonded over music and poetry mostly, but other things too. He will be missed.
Nell, please know my thoughts are with you.
