Colin DUNN Obituary

Dr. Colin Dunn passed away in the early morning on March 20, 2024 at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with cancer. Despite this diagnosis and the related health challenges over the past year, Colin's humour never faltered, even when in palliative care, and he stayed strong until the end. A proud family man, Colin leaves behind Sara, his devoted wife of almost 52 years, his adoring children - Kas (Jen, Winston) and Nina (David, Ella and Aidan) and his loving sister Shirley. Colin's cheerful attitude, friendliness, and great humour will be missed by all who knew him.

Colin was passionate about geology and he worked tirelessly for decades in advancing the field of biogeochemistry as it relates to exploration.

The family will hold their own private ceremony in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital in Colin's name: https://sphf.ca/support-the-saanich-peninsula-hospital/

I was saddened to hear of Colin's passing.
I first met Colin in 1971 when I was a young geology student at the University of Regina. Over the years with the Saskatchewan Geological Survey and Geoff Parslow I got to know Colin as a colleague and friend. We became even closer colleagues while being employed as research scientists at the Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa.
In 2015 I was invited by an Australian mining company to give some geology lectures at various venues across the country. Apart from my host I did not know one person on this entire continent. One of the lectures was given at a Pub in Perth. . When I stood in front of the podium and looked out at this darkened room of faces I did not know I noticed this smiling man in the front row waving this hand - it was Colin! Needless to say after the talk we caught up on old times and numerous beverages.
In addition to being a great geologist and world-class bio-geochemist Colin was a real "gentleman". I think that is what I will remember him for the most.

Sorry to hear about Colin and wish to send my condolences. He was a true inspiration in his innovative biogeochem techniques, which he was truly passionate about. And a great teacher; he could explain it all quite simply. He was a wonderful man.
