Corrine LOWEN Obituary

LOWEN, Corrine Ann (Simonson) Corrine's journey beside us ended peacefully, shortly before sunrise on Friday January 9th. Many walked with her somewhere along the way, and all are blessed with her love and lessons. Under the devoted and professional care of the Royal Jubilee Hospital's medical staff, she willed herself to live to say goodbye to her family at Christmas. Corrine is survived by her husband Don; grandmother Anna Bennett; parents Ron and Bev Simonson; sisters Donna Layden (Randy) and Karen Colbert (Bruce); sons Noah Davis (Carli) and Jesse Davis (Ikuko); step-daughter Colleen Lima (John); grandchildren Eli and Halle Davis, Jack and Franky Lima; plus a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. Born in Edmonton, Alberta on March 15, 1958, Corrine spent most of her childhood years in Red Deer. As a teenager, she moved to the Pacific Coast, where she eventually raised her two sons. The family settled in Victoria in 1989. After several years in the textile and interior design trade, Corrine returned to school in her early 40s' to acquire her high school diploma. She then completed an honours degree (Sociology) in 2006, and her Masters (Studies in Policy and Practice) in 2012, both at the University of Victoria. When Corrine was not caring for family or garden, or cooking something delicious, she practised and taught yoga in the Iyengar tradition. When she became ill in the summer of 2014, she was working as a researcher in health equity at UVIC, and would have commenced doctoral studies there last fall. Friends and family will gather for a memorial service at the UVIC Multifaith Chapel at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, January 17th, 2015. For directions, go to: http://web.uvic.ca/multifaith/ chapel/index.html. The Iyengar Yoga Center will then host a celebration of Corrine's life, with food and music of course, at 12:30 p.m. Address is #202 - 919 Fort Street. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the: Iyengar Yoga Center of Victoria, #202 - 919 Fort Street, Victoria, BC V8V 3K3

I am fortunate to have taken yoga classes with Corrine. I felt very comfortable around her and also inspired by her. She met with me outside of the yoga studio and we talked about returning to university as a mature student. She encouraged me to pursue further education and career goals. This meeting with her helped me take the step of returning to school full time. I am very grateful for this support she offered me.

My condolences to her husband and family. Such a wonderful woman will be greatly missed.

I met Corrine in January 2009 and she's been my teacher, my mentor and my friend. How I will miss her smile, her dedication, her humour, her generosity, her kindness and her love. I am so much less without her, and am so lucky to have been in her light. She will always be with me, a voice in my ear, a song in my heart, as she will be with all who love her. I honour her with my practice and miss her every day.

I was very saddened to learn of Corrine's passing today. She was my yoga teacher at Cedar Hill Rec. Centre for several years. She shared her warmth and her knowledge of yoga with us - she was a beautiful person. My deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Don, I'm so very sorry. I only met Corrine a few times but she was such a warm friendly down to earth and giving person. It's the people like that who become angels and give the rest of us strength.

Don and family: My thoughts are with you at this time of transition and loss. Corrine was a very special person - she did indeed touch many, many people. I was one of her devoted yoga students. Her voice will forever be in my head as I continue to apply the lessons she taught. Corrine spoke lovingly of her life and especially her sons, who she was so proud of. I am so grateful to have been part of her journey. The ripples of her life will continue through us all.
