Carol and Geoffrey, I have not been in La Paz Bolivia for a long time. And recently I get to communicate on the internet. In Venezuela the situation was not right. There was no internet in the place that I lived.
Today, March 11, I hear about Daniel's departure.
I'm very sad to know all the hardships you went through. I know it was very hard for you. And that's why I'm very sorry. But even if it's too late I'm here and I'll be with you with the beautiful moments we spent together. I will never forget you.
My celular number is 72712020 and my e-mail: [email protected].

Lesley and I are deeply saddened to hear this sad news about Daniel, Carol Anne and Geoffrey. He was so interesting and interested, always asking reaching questions with an intent to provoke discussion and to learn. I first met Daniel during your Berkeley days, many years ago, and long marveled at his wry humour, intellect, and extraordinary perserverance in the face of his health challenges. Our thoughts are with you both during this difficult time.

Reading all these tributes and memories it's hard to believe that they describe one man. If he had been born 400 years ago there would likely be some churches, madrigals and some maps with his name on them. I also had the good fortune to meet Daniel at the UBC School of Architecture and delighted in any time since then that we were able to spend together. I too will miss his laugh, his caring nature, fondness for bad jokes and their endless refinement, his resonant singing voice, his thoughtful nods, fascination with the world, and his compassion and interest in others. Daniel had a tremendous spirit that transcended his challenges and will continue to be a lifelong inspiration for me.

I knew Dan from our UBC Architecture days, and remember years of his lively provocations and insights through his days on Victoria's Planning and Design committees. He was always uniformly fun, spirited, and engaged - a great, great guy. He had lots of the old Nick in him, he did. I send kind thoughts to his family...

Carol Anne,
Alice and I were e-mailing with Julie Pegg this morning and she passed along the sad news.
It's been a long time since I last saw you and Daniel but I have fond memories of those Halcyon days with the School of Architecture Gang: Hamish, Catherine Alkenbrach, Elizabeth MacKenzie et al.
I remember Daniel's bold laugh, humuor,and optimism.
I send my condolences to you and the family.

Daniel was a great friend and an amazing person with a generous, inquisitive nature, an indomitable spirit and a great sense of humour. I will treaure our many hours spent together discussing the finer points of our teenage years spent in boarding school, architecture, the natural world and politics, for his insights and strong views were always interesting and well considered. He was bold, purposeful and displayed a strong but charming presence in the company of others. In dealing with his MS and related health issues he was as tough and tenacious as one imagine. A lovely man, to be forever missed.
On behalf of my wife Barb, our deepest condolences to Carol Anne, Geoffrey and the rest of the family at this saddest of times.

Dan was on the student committee that reviewed incoming applications for the UBC School of Architecture, and he supported my application in 1979. I kept up with him , especially during his annual Christmas shopping visits to our store Charles Rupert on Oak Bay Avenue, and always looked forward to seeing him. Caring and insightful. Good man. All my best wishes to his family.

I first met Daniel more than twenty years ago when I first ran for Victoria City Council. After I was elected to Council I benefited so much from Daniel's contributions on both the Advisory Planning Commission and the Advisory Design Panel. I was so inspired by his passion for design and his ability to focus on the importance of what might seem to others to be insignificant details, as well as the big picture, when analyzing an application. Daniel's love of life, love of architecture and love of good urban design were such gifts to me and did much to inform my consideration of planning applications. Daniel radiated so much positive energy. He will be much missed.

Dan generously shared his apartment with me in the fall of 1979, as two first year students in the School of Architecture at UBC. We became fast friends, and enjoyed a friendship of many years.
He spent the summer of 1980 in my home town in Pennsylvania, where we worked on a home building crew. Along with playing Rugby that summer with a few local tough Pa. boys, Dan shared great stories of adventure from his Geologic travels in the BC north country. He enjoyed recalling tales witnessing a broken down paddle wheel boat, stranded stream-side, gambling cards and drink glasses left behind on the tables, and another great story of a pack mule led by a prospector down a valley as he was perched high above surveying rock formations. Dan had a wonderful quest for adventure.
He wrote me all the years since, now and then, and I became accustomed to the idea Dan would be here forever. I'm deeply saddened by the news of his passing.
His spirit lives on and always will at least in part, in my heart.
My support and love to Carol Anne and Geoffry.
Please allow me to share the joy Id' come to know as Dan's friend, and to celebrate a beautiful life, lived well.
God Speed Dan.

I was saddened and surprised to hear of Daniel's death. Daniel often came to the Tuesday evening Spanish conversational group meetings at Serious Coffee. It was a joy to speak Spanish with him and to enjoy his sense of humor. I will miss him.

Daniel and I were partners in a project in architecture school. I was too nervous to present, so he stood up with a laugh and effortlessly continued, saving us. That was Dan.
I'll never forget his whooping crane laugh!

Daniel was a great friend from our years at the School of Architecture at UBC .
Dan was the vocalist in a band we had at school and used to sing "Look at me - I'm Mick Jagger !" when we played "Shattered" .
Reid Flemming was his favorite Milkman and Dan was fond of letting everyone know it . He always had a twinkle in his eye and lit-up any room he was in .
He will be sorely missed .
Heartfelt sympathy to Carol Anne + Geoffry .

Dan attended Shawnigan Lake School and was part of the Class of 1969. He was a Ripley's House lad and a star cricketer; selected to play on the 1st XI for three years! He was a gentleman and thoughtful person then as he has been for as long as I have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
