Darrell PATTERSON Obituary

PATTERSON, Darrell Wayne February 21, 1960 - March 18, 2021 On a lovely Spring-like day in Victoria, suddenly and without pain, Darrell completed his journey of this life. He was born in Winnipeg and with the rest of his family moved to Victoria in 1965. There he attended Blanshard elementary school and later Victoria High. He especially enjoyed sports and was an eager participant on the hockey and baseball teams. Ice skating at Memorial Arena was also a favourite activity. Later, golf became his passion and he relentlessly pursued it until finally scoring par at Mount Doug more than once. Music was a lifelong love and, being blessed with a beautiful baritone voice, he was a member of several school and church choirs. Darrell travelled extensively throughout his early life and while eating peanut butter sandwiches and living in his van, along with showers at the YMCA, he managed to save enough to visit Australia, Mexico, Greece, Europe and the Far East. It was in Thailand, riding his scooter, that he took a spill and broke his back. Laying on the jungle floor for 24 hours, help finally arrived in the form of a man with an ox and a cart. Working career was varied and accomplishments were many including Ski Instructor, PADI scuba certification and flying lessons. His Christian faith was strong, and when confronted with challenges later in life, he faced them with grace and good humour. He volunteered for the naked bungy jump and said although it was a little chilly, it warmed him knowing all proceeds went to the Schizophrenic Society of Victoria, a cause that was very dear to him. Darrell was predeceased by his parents Don and Betty Patterson, little brother Donnie, sister Sharon (Wally) and foster brother Lance. Left to mourn are foster parents Mark and Sue, brother Clark (Kathy), sister Donalyn (Tom), nephews Daniel (Lyndsey), Trevor (Jacob), Jason, Tony, Jessie, niece Alex and great-nieces Ava and Sunni. In his lifetime, with his gentle, kind spirit, Darrell amassed a huge array of friends, all of whom were very special to him. From the Courts, Church, Christie's pub and Mount Doug golf course there are far too many to mention all. Special thanks to Don Gummison for his support during this time. At a later date, a gathering will be held at sister Donalyn's home in Oak Bay. Also a memorial golf tournament is being planned. Details to follow. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" Matthew 5:1-3

As long as I can remember my Uncle Darrell has always been a big part of my life. From building a snowman as a toddler to playing street hockey & catch, my childhood is filled with memories of my Uncle. Holidays were spent together & he was a comforting soul to have around. He lived with us at different points in his life, through the ups & downs while being the most caring & gentle man. I will always look up to my Uncle as an amazing person & he will never be forgotten.

Memory...One day Darrell called me and asked if I was busy in the coming days. “No,” I replied. “What’s up?” Darell informed me that he had a little job for us at a house in Fairfield cleaning gutters. “It won’t take long”, he said. So I agreed to help him and away we went in my truck after picking up a ladder from another of his friends. Upon arrival at the house, Darrell went up to the door and an elderly lady answered and as soon as she saw Darrell, her face immediately lit up. “Oh Darrell, so glad you’re here,” she said and her and Darrell began to engage in a lovely little chat as I unloaded the ladder to prepare for the task at hand. When I finally got the ladder in place, Darrell finished his chat and came to inform me that “I’m afraid of heights.”
So I climbed up the ladder and getting to the top, I saw that the gutters were relatively clean. I did some cursory cleaning and climbed back down and saw Darrell had gone back to chat with the lady.
It then dawned on me that she didn’t really need her gutters cleaned at all. She just really loved Darrell and enjoyed having this polite, charming ,soft and gentle man around.

I met Clark, Darrell and Donalynn soon after they lost their Mother. Darrell and I became close friends in our 20’s while living in Vancouver. We did so many FUN things together, Expo86 was one, PNE most years was a great time but Darrell’s love for music and dancing was the best time, we would dance till closing time at many nightclubs in Vancouver. Listening to his stories of all his travels was a joy. No matter how long we went in recent years without seeing each other as soon as we did the friendship was just the same. Darrell was a kind, gentle and caring man. I will miss him.
I’m so sorry Donalynn and Clark for your loss.

I will miss Darrell, a beautiful gentle man with a very kind soul. I feel privileged to have known him and to have spent time golfing and hanging out with him and his sister. Finding the words to express the essence of Darrell is difficult for me, but those that knew Darrell understand what I mean. Peace

Darrell and I went to Vic High together. He was extraordinarily well rounded and talented. We used to hang around in the school auditorium and listen to those kids who could play the piano. He always listened really intently. As second semester rolled around he disappeared for about six weeks. When he finally surfaced, he sat down at the Vic High Auditorium grand piano and started playing. He was just finishing off Grade six of ten of the Royal Music Conservatory books and played beautifully. Darrell knocked our socks off. He was a good soul and clearly touched many lives. I feel privileged to have known him for the short time I did. I hope he finds peace and love as he continues his journey in the undiscovered country.
