Darryl Sheilds Obituary

SHEILDS, Darryl Wayne
February 5, 1935 - October 27, 2023

Darryl was born February 5th, 1935, at Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria and passed away there suddenly on October 27th, 2023, with his loving wife Carol and dearly loved friends Erika and Jodi by his side. He was born to William (Bill) and Florence Sheilds nee Gray of Sooke, BC where he then lived until moving into Victoria in 1956. He was a graduate of Milnes Landing High School in Sooke in 1953. After having worked for Sooke Harbour Fishing & Packing Co. starting at age 16, he went on to work at Island Tug & Barge Co. Ltd in 1955 until joining the B.C. Liquor Control Board in 1968. In 1984 he was pensioned out due to a severe nerve related back injury and then became a stay-at-home Dad for his daughter Marilyn.

He was predeceased by his beloved Marilyn in 2008, his parents Bill in 1998 and Florence in 2010, his older brother Warren in 1946, his elder sister Beverly Dickie (Gorden deceased 2002) in 2010.

Darryl is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Carol (nee Strachan), his sister Lorraine Jarvie (Tom deceased 2008), several nieces and nephews in BC and the U.S. as well as cousins in the U.S.

He was a great sports fan especially the Seattle Seahawks and for several years a season ticket holder where we would have great fun tailgating with his niece Cheryl and her husband Donnie and their daughters. He also enjoyed fastpitch softball and for many years followed Bate Construction and then subsequent team names until becoming the Legends. For many years holidays consisted of trips to the Senior Men's National Championships, which Victoria won many, all while visiting all ten provinces; and later car trips to the ISC World Championships visiting many numerous states. He also enjoyed annual trips to Maui with whale watching, and then after a first cruise to Alaska with both Seahawk players and the Seagal's, he loved those "floating hotels" and took many other cruises.

When Carol got interested in genealogy, he was proud to learn through his mother's line that he was descended from John Gray who arrived at Plymouth Rock in 1620 aboard the Mayflower. He is also descended from James Sheilds who arrived in Victoria in 1863 and later homesteaded on land beside the Sooke River and then William Bell Charters family who arrived in 1862 and later settled in Sooke.

In lieu of flowers, since Darryl had a great fondness for Sooke, he would want donations to be made to the Sooke Regional Museum, 2070 Phillips Road, Sooke, B.C. V9Z 0Y3 or the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society, 2895B Sooke River Road, Sooke, B.C., V9Z 0Y1, or to a charity of your choice.

We would like to thank the B.C. Ambulance Service as well as the ER staff at RJH for their care and compassion in tending to Darryl.

Darryl asked that there be no service and he will be interred at Hatley Memorial Gardens with Marilyn. He will be greatly missed.

Many happy childhood memories of family get togethers with Uncle Darryl, Auntie Carol, and Marilyn and more than a few laughs (clean or otherwise with Uncle Darryl). Since moving from Victoria, I always enjoyed our catch-up visits when I returned home; I have missed them this last decade. Love and condolences Auntie Carol.
