David Boag Obituary

BOAG, David Archibald January 24, 1934 - Edmonton, Alberta December 6, 2017 - Calgary, Alberta David Archibald Boag of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at the age of 83 years. David was born in Edmonton and grew up on the Boag Homestead near Bremner east of Edmonton. At age 14, his family moved to Victoria, BC. He returned to the University of Alberta to pursue his studies and received his PhD from Washington State University (Pullman) in 1961. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Anton Dohrn Zoological Station in Naples, Italy where he met and subsequently married Sofia in 1963. He joined the Department of Zoology faculty at the University of Alberta in 1963 where he taught until retirement in June 1991. David directed the RB Miller (now Kananaskis) Biological Research Station west of Turner Valley, AB for 20 years. A much-respected professor, he taught legions of undergraduates and supervised many graduate students over his career. His research centered largely on the ecology of grouse (Canada and Scotland), but included research on jellyfish (Italy), lizards (Italy), land and pond snails, magpies, ground squirrels, and raptors in Canada. He and Sofia retired to Brentwood Bay, B.C. where he lived until October, 2012. David was a scholar, a gentleman and a man of principle. He was deeply committed to public engagement with environmental issues and bestowed upon his students a citizen's responsibility in contributing to environmental protection. He was also a man deeply concerned about social justice. David retained his grace, kindness, and love of gardening, the outdoors and natural history through to the last days of his life. He leaves us with many wonderful memories. He was much loved, and by many. David is survived by his son Tom and daughter-in-law Michele; daughter Franca; Nicola, Samantha and Tala (Rosenthal); siblings Joyce (Bevan) Gore-Langton, Brenda (Ian) May, and Brian (Rosemary); cousins Bill, John, and Terry Bocock; daughter-in-law Claire Klassen; as well as Heather and Robin. David was predeceased by his wife, Maria Sofia (nee Giaquinto) in 2000, and his parents Thomas and Marjorie Boag (nee Bocock). A Memorial Service to celebrate David's life will be held in Victoria at St. Michael's Church on January 15, 2018. The family will host a reception afterwards. It was not until long after Daves passing that I learned of it, and longer still til now that I write - that is my error for which I apologise.
All that I read herein written by others about Dave seems true, not only Dave as a keen professional research man but a wonderful teacher, formally and informally, in school and at home. He taught me well and I am thankful for that. And our visits with the Franca, Tom, Sofia and Dave household were always enjoyable as were their visits to us. I pass on our hope for Tom and Franca that the future is a good one; rest assured, you had a wonderful pair of parents.

I have fond Memories of David and Sophia. David as my MSc. supervisor helped me greatly in learning the scientific method as well as writing clearly. Sophia was a wonderful host and warm entertainer, and my wife and I greatly enjoyed their company many times after I was no longer a student, both in Edmonton and Victoria.

I was most sorry to hear of David's passing just today. I remain most grateful for his generosity and guidance when I arrived as a young professor at U Alberta nearly 40 years ago. I remember him with great fondness and respect as an important mentor who much affected the way I developed my career. I offer my sincerely sympathy and condolences to the Boag family.

We have fond memories of Dr. Boag at the R.B. Miller Biological Station, where I (Don) was a graduate student 1970-74. He also served on my thesis committee. He always ensured all work was done with strict scientific integrity. I always learned something in discussions and debates with him.
Condolences to family and friends!

Just yesterday, I learned from a friend in Victoria, that Dr David Boag had recently passed away. I googled the obituary for information and it brought back memories of years gone by. Dr Boag was a great lecturer in Zoology at UofA. I took several courses taught by him and was also fortunate to be part of the summer field crew at the RB Miller station in the late 1960s, of which I still have fond recollections. It gave me lasting experiences of the beauty and wildlife of the Sheep River area.
My sincere condolences to the family at this difficult time. My thoughts are with you. Tom, I first saw you as a youngster (about three years of age) at the RB Miller station during a summer in the late 1960s. Maybe one day, we'll meet.

It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Mr. Boag. We are grateful to have known his kind soul, though for only two years, we learned about his amazing, and highly accomplished life, wishing we had known him longer! But grateful to have seen his shiny, kind and sincere eyes daily. Enjoyed our conversations in Italian, and his compliments on my shoes!

This man will be missed. Thank you for being the BEST companion to our John Zampini! See you on the other side someday David. Ciao bello! from the Zampini Family.

Looking back on life one realizes how significant and important certain individuals were. Dr. David Boag was one of those in my life. His teachings in the classroom and in the field in the late 1960s gave me the necessary understanding of biology and ecology that lead to my very fulfilling and rewarding career in wildlife management in NWT and Alberta. I am very thankful for this and my sincere condolences go out to the family at this sad time.

So sorry to hear of David's passing. I have very early memories of him on the front landing at the Bocock farm studying for university exams in the morning sun. Much later I would be studying for exams for biology courses he taught at the UofA. Dr. Boag was a great influence in my desire to become Dr. Allam. He will be missed by many.

Tom:

I'm so very sorry to hear of the passing of your father. I had the pleasure of being one of Dr. Boag's last students at the Miller Station when he retired. He was a true scholar and his lessons have followed me through out my life and profession career. He will be missed and fondly remembered by many of his past students. Your family should be very proud of his legacy.

Dear Tom and Michele:
I took my Ornitholgy course through David and was so moved by this knowledgable and gentle man! Years later I worked with you mom (I am a healthcare worker) and was so happy to have met her as well! I would love to share a story or two about your wonderful folks if/when I get a chance to meet you in the future in Edmonton during a celebration of their lives.

My sincere condolences go out to you folks at this difficult time!
