David Halliwell Obituary

HALLIWELL, Dr. David Passed away peacefully on May 6, 2007. He will be lovingly remembered by his four children, Margaret (Mike) Banner of Sooke, BC, John of Victoria, BC, Barbara (Andrew) Chen of Hong Kong, and Mary (Bernie) Halliwell-Cyr of Ottawa, and his adored grandchildren, Stephanie, Kevin and Matthew Banner, and Alex and Elie Chen. He also will be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends across Canada. He has gone to meet his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty, who died on December 3, 2006. Proud of his prairie roots, Dave was the 4th of 5 children born to Florence (McKnight) and Harry Halliwell in Oxbow, Saskatchewan. When he was eight, the family moved to Wolseley, Saskatchewan. Dave loved to recount stories about swimming in the local swimming hole, playing baseball and golfing with his father. In 1946, Dave graduated with a medical degree from the University of Manitoba (UofM). In 1948, he married Elizabeth Anne Henderson, a nurse, and moved with her to Kenora, Ontario where he had a thriving general practice, and where their four children were born. Dave and Betty were happy and devoted to each other as they travelled through life together. A private man with a vivacious social wife, Dave was often dragged into life by Betty. He had always planned to study ophthalmology, so in 1966 the family moved to Winnipeg where Dave returned to study at the UofM. After completing his studies in 1969, he and Betty relocated to Victoria, BC to open his new practice. Family, friends, the church, sports, music, and life-long learning were all important parts of Dave's life. He spent years researching the family roots, and after retiring he bought a computer, and compiled on it the family history. Dave and Betty loved to travel to places around the world to visit family and friends. They were lifelong Christians, and were actively involved with their church in the communities in which they lived. Dave was also a Kinsman, a Shriner and a Mason. He had a life-long passion for sports, and was known to watch one game on the television while simultaneously listening to another game on a transistor radio; he loved golf, from the first time he played in 1932 to the last time he was able to play. Dave was an active member of the Kenora Golf and Country Club and the Victoria Golf Club for many years. Music played an important part in Dave's life, listening as well as playing. He played the baritone horn in the Wolseley town band as a teen, continued playing into adulthood and was a founding member of a marching band in Kenora. He also took piano lessons alongside his young children. Dave had a deep sense of commitment and abiding loyalty to family and friends and he believed you must give back to your community. He had a quiet and gentle personality, and he loved to laugh. He was a man of great character and integrity. Dave will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held in mid-July when the family can congregate. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice, smile at a stranger and phone an old friend. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com 367364

The righteous live forever,
and his reward is with the Lord;
The Most High takes care of [him]
Therefore [he] will receive a glorious crown
And a beautiful diadem from the hand of the Lord,
Because with his right hand he will
cover [him],
and with his arm he will shield [him] Wisdom 5:15-16

David was a prince, and I was honoured to know him. Grace and Peace to all his family of which he was so proud .
