David Howells Obituary

Born July 28, 1924, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2017. Dad was predeceased by his son, Geoff in 1998 and is survived by his wife Dilys of 72 years. He is also survived by his son David (Brenda), daughter-in-law Sandi, grandchildren Leigha (Darryl), Trevor (Emily), Christopher (Karli), Brandon and Chelsea and 5, soon to be 6, great grandchildren.

Dad was born in Penclawdd, a village in South Wales, UK and attended Gowerton Grammar School. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1942, and served as a flight navigator in RAF ferry command delivering fighters and bombers to Britain from Canada. There were nearly 10,000 aircraft ferried across the Atlantic during the war.

Dad emigrated to Canada with Mom in 1947, starting out in Montreal, moving to Vancouver in 1953 and then to Victoria in 1968. He was a Credit Manager with Sears until his retirement in 1986. Dad was a long time member of Uplands Golf Club actively playing a couple of times a week up until the age of 91.

He loved to garden and travel, over the last 30 years Mom and Dad saw much of the world. His favourite day was Sunday, roast beef dinner, one Scotch, neat, and seeing his grandchildren.

We would like to thank Dr. McPherson and the caregivers at Nurse Next Door who cared for Dad at home these past 8 months.

We will miss your wit and your ability to make everybody laugh.

Private family service to be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Dear Dilys and family
We were very sad to read of Winston's passing. Mom and Dad ( Gladys and Glyn Benjamin) always enjoying visiting the welsh relatives and I remember Winston as a kind and caring gentleman when we had Christmas visits. I was intrigued by his contribution in the war and looked it up to read about those brave men who ferried the aircraft. He was part of a generation that we are endebted to and who moved on to create a wonderful life for his sons and families. Hugs to You Dilys

Oh my - such a loss and such a wonderful man. Without fail, every time our paths crossed, Dave had the most heart-warming twinkle in his eye and a welcoming smile that I could 'feel' across the room. I will miss him. Love and hugs to everyone -- 'Auntie Kim'.
