MAIS, Dr David Ernest Ian
June 9, 1938 - April 6, 2024
Dr David Ernest Ian Mais was born on June 9th, 1938 at Grey Abbey, Mandeville, Jamaica. He was schooled at Munro College where he was Captain of the school Shooting Club. He read Sciences at the University of the West Indies and then went on to study medicine at St Thomas's Hospital, London, graduating with a degree in General Medicine, and then specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After practicing for a while in England, he moved back to Jamaica in 1967 to work in a clinic with his father.
David met his wife, Sarah, in Jamaica and they were married in 1968, and had three children. In 1976, the family moved to Trail BC where they made many friends and learned to ski. David's biggest adventure was backcountry skiing with his boys on Kokanee Glacier. The family then moved to Chemainus and David set up practice with Duncan Price, and then Bettina Zehradka. He was a gentle, loving man with a quiet voice, a sweet smile, and a naughty sense of humour. He adored his wife and family and had many friends.
Sadly he developed Alzheimer's disease. He was well cared for by the staff at Chemainus Long Term Care where he died peacefully on the morning of April 6th, 2024. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He leaves behind his wife, three children and their spouses, his sister in law and four nephews, seven grandchildren, and his extended family in England.
For those wishing to pay their respects, a Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 pm on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at St Joseph's Catholic Church, 9745 Elm Street, Chemainus, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to BC Children's Hospital Foundation: 938, W 28th Ave, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 4H4 or to a charity of your choice.
