David Philip Obituary

PHILIP, David Stewart Dr. David Stewart Philip, 83, passed away peacefully at home in Victoria on March 21st, 2016. David was born in Dundee, Scotland to David Stewart Philip and Williamina Kinnoch Smart Philip on February 2nd, 1933. He attended the Harris Academy in Dundee where he met Chris, his future wife of nearly 59 years. He was School Captain, graduating with honours in 1950. He went on to earn a degree in dentistry from St. Andrews University with post-graduate studies in children's dentistry and oral surgery. He was President of The British Dental Students Association from 1956 to 1957. A year after their marriage in 1957, David and Chris emigrated to Victoria. He built his first dental practice in Colwood which pioneered innovative technologies, business practices and superlative dental care. He had a branch practice at Royal Oak. His profound belief in lifelong education led to continued studies and certification in implantology and aesthetic dentistry. He was an accredited member of The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry from 1993 after four years of study and presentations. He was Chairman of Accreditation of the AACD in 1996. He lectured in cosmetic dentistry across Canada on behalf of The Aurum Group. Over his lifetime, David belonged to numerous charitable organizations, sports clubs, academic and community institutions. He joined the Oak Bay Cricket Club in 1958, later becoming President of the Victoria and District Cricket Association. He had a long affiliation with the Castaways Rugby Club. He was a member of the Langford Lion's Club in the early 60s. He had appointments to several professional committees. David was Chairman of the Oak Bay Parks and Recreation Committee from 1976 to 1982, Chairman of Camosun College Board of Directors 1989-1990. He was extremely proud of having established the Camosun College Certified Dental Assistant Program. In 1990, he was appointed to the University of Victoria Board of Governors and was UVIC Board Chairman from 1993 to 1995. Latterly, undeterred by unreliable health, he was an active member of The Oak Bay Rotary Club, annually making and selling candy floss at The Oak Bay Tea Party, somewhat countering dental advice he would give at his practice on Oak Bay Avenue. David was a member of The Royal Colwood Golf Club, The Victoria Golf Club and The Union Club of British Columbia. David was predeceased by his beloved son, John. He is survived by his loving wife, Chris; his devoted sons, David and Blair (Ann) and John's daughter, Capri Philip. The Philip family will be forever grateful for the exceptional care David received over many years. We particularly thank Dr. David E. Bell, Dr. Kenneth Yvorchuk, Dr. Rene Weir and the many nurses and physicians at The Jubilee Hospital. We are also truly thankful to our many wonderful friends, both near and far for their loving support. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 28th at McCall's Funeral Home at 1400 Vancouver Street at Johnson Street with The Rev. Dr. Eugen Bannerman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.bc.ca). Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

Dear Mrs. Philip, David and Blair,
It was with great sadness that I learned of Dr. Philip's passing. I had worked with him at the Colwood Dental Clinic then in Royal Oak. He was a respected dentist and a friend to all his patients. I will remember his kindness and generosity. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your time of sorrow.

I recently returned from a winter holiday and heard that Dr. Philip had passed away. I was amongst his first patients when he opened his practice at Colwood corner. He was my dentist all through my teens and he offered me my first job when I finished highschool. He not only taught me on the job but arranged for me to take night classes and earn my dental assistant diploma. I was working with him the day John was born and was saddened to read about John's passing. Dr.Philip ( I never called him David!)will be forever in my heart. Condolences to Chris and family.

Chris, David & Blair

Dr. Philip was a true professional and a great leader in every sense of the word. He was also one of the kindest individuals I have ever met. He was always most interested in my family and me, and in turn, had my greatest respect.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please know he touched many, many lives.

To Chris and family, Kay and Tom send their condolences. We learned that David had watched Tom and his group playing bridge in the Students' Union in Dundee in the 50s! He was always very friendly and liked our jokes which we believe he used in his lectures. We will miss him and will always
remember him as a good friend. Sorry we were unable to attend the memorial but our thoughts are with you. Tom and Kay Peet

Chris, condolences to you and your sons. I met "Dr. Phillip" as an emergency patient in December 1957. From that time on my dental visits always included an update on yours and my family. You have been blessed to have walked through life with a wonderful loving partner. I and my family treasure having had him as our dentist and friend. Sharon and Pete Bishop

Mrs. Philip, David and Blair,
I was very saddened to hear of Dr. Philips passing. Although we hadn't stayed in touch over the years, whenever I ran into David we always had a great chat and a quick catch up with some great memories thrown into the conversation. You all made me feel like a part of your family in my high school years when John and I were inseparable buddies and getting into all kinds of teenage high jinks and adventures. It am forever grateful for your warmth and kindness during those years. The wonderful home cooked meals and great discussions with Dr. Philip, whose sage advice and guidance helped me be the person I am today.
He was a great man, a wonderful father and very respected professional. He will be missed by all.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

To Chris and family, my condolences. I first met David when I was a registrar in oral surgery at Dundee Dental Hospital. He had graduated a few years ahead of me but, while visiting Dundee he heard that I was leaving to teach at UBC.As always David was friendly and helpful and we met as soon as I arrived in Vancouver.

Later in life as I entered semi retirement from UBC but began my chronic Head and Neck pain clinic he kindly allowed me the use of his clinic in Oak Bay .

Sorry to see a great friend pass away but I will always remember his friendly, helpful ways.

To David Philip's family,
David was a member of the Take Heart Cardiac Rehab program at Saanich Commonwealth Place Center and exercised with us faithfully for a number of years. He was always a keen participant and always trying to improve.
He was also a great support to newer members who were somewhat shy. If we had a client who was feeling overwhelmed in our exercising environment - we would frequently place them on the bike beside David. We didn't have to tell David anything, he would just look over at us and nod. We would soon see them engrossed in conversation. Frequently the newer client would say later how they enjoyed their exercise that day and especially cycling beside that very nice man who was so friendly.
David was a delightful individual and I know he will be missed by his family but also the community.
Please know that our thoughts are with you.
Sandy Gilmour.

To Chris, David and Blair

Cathy and I are away as you know and won't be back until April. We were very saddened by Dave's passing but fully know you and your family would have done everything possible. It seems Dave did not miss out on too many opportunities to embrace life. Both of you became our long lost Scottish surrogate relatives and great friends. We were honoured to be part of Dave's adventures.
We have had the wee dram as required and look forward to seeing you back in Victoria.
