David Powell Obituary
POWELL, David
June 28, 1930 - October 12, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Powell of Victoria, British Columbia.
Dave will be forever loved and remembered by his wife, Sharon Rae-Powell, son David Powell, daughter Allison Powell, stepdaughter Veronica Jackson (Bill), grandchildren Jonah Powell, Olivia Jackson and Billy Jackson, nieces Sue Silk (Mike), Karen Mounce, and nephew Keith Powell. Dave was predeceased by his first wife, Frances (Gemmell), parents Robert and Elsie (Spencer), sisters Joy Pye (Alan), Constance Powell, and Barbara Davies (Harry), brothers Tudor and Robert, niece Jill Brierley (David), and nephew Tudor Powell.
Dave was born and raised in Manchester, England. As a young man, he served in the UK National Service and the British Merchant Navy, where he travelled to the Middle East, Hong Kong, South America, and other parts of the world. Dave immigrated to Canada in 1957, eventually settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he worked as a laboratory technologist for the University of Manitoba and later the Health Sciences Centre.
Dave met and married his first wife in Winnipeg and they had two children together. After Frances died an untimely death of cancer in 1977 Dave was left to raise their children as a single parent. He met Sharon in Winnipeg in 1989 and they married in 1991. Dave loved being near the water and in 2008, they moved to Victoria where they spent many enjoyable hours looking out over the ocean, Dave with his trusty binoculars in hand.
Dave was physically active all his life. He loved, hiking, cycling (even in Winnipeg winters), playing rugby, boxing and running. In his 60's Dave began going to the gym and swimming, which he continued to do until the year before his death.
Dave's quiet reserved manner belied his keen intellect, sharp wit, and an immense breadth and depth of knowledge. He was a true bibliophile and was well read in many areas including economics, politics, history, and philosophy. Dave also had a wonderful sense of fun. He liked to play practical jokes, had a great sense of rhythm, and occasionally, amongst family and friends, could let his hair down. Dave was a kind and gentle man, but he was no pushover. He knew his own mind and stood his ground when his limit had been reached.
Dave was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was dearly loved by his grandchildren who still rave about Grampy's pizza and breakfast feasts. Dave rarely missed a one of his grandson's soccer games.
Dave had an iron will and though his last months were challenging, he continued to do as many of the things he enjoyed as he could until he was admitted to hospital a few days before he died.
Dave was a good man, a humble man and a loving man. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by family and friends.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held at a later date.
