David Squance Obituary

SQUANCE, David Robin September 18, 1945 - June 4, 2022 It is with heavy hearts we mourn the passing of David, much beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle. David was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, and is lovingly remembered by children, Michael (Juneko) and Leah (Sam); grandchildren, Mika and Kaito; sisters, Valerie, Lynda, Beth (Allan), and Fay (Paul) and a large extended family and network of friends. He is deeply missed. David was born in Edmonton and grew up in Victoria. He spent many years teaching in the Kootenays, first Nelson and then Fernie. After 28 years in Fernie, Mary and David came back to Victoria in 2006 to be closer to family. David had a wonderful sense of humour; a quiet and gentle nature; and loved to help family, friends, and his community as an active volunteer. He enjoyed the outdoors and could regularly be found cycling, hiking, and working in his and Mary's extensive gardens. David also loved puzzles and games (his knowledge of 2- and 3-letter Scrabble words was unparalleled), was an avid bridge player and an amateur programmer. He recently combined these interests by writing crossword puzzles for the retired teacher's magazine using a program he created. A Memorial Service will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Sunday, June 26, 2022 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations gratefully accepted at Crohn's and Colitis Canada (https://crohnsandcolitis.ca). Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com

Really miss Dave and Mary. We were friends long ago when we were young. Two fine people! Enjoyed visits with them in the Cariboo before Mary got sick.

Dave was a true gentleman and a scholar. A valued friend, patient bridge partner and esteemed colleague. Sincere sympathy Leah and Michael and your families. He was very proud of you all.

I have fond memories of the times I shared with David and Mary while they lived in Nelson as part of a discussion group. Very open and insightful dialogue--our families were very young at the time. More recently I reconnected with Mary through St. John's "Eco-vision" group in Deep Cove (about 10 years ago). My condolences to family members, particularly Dave and Mary's children.

Sincere sympathy to the whole family, our hearts are broken, the hill was a more beautiful place with David and Mary´s beautiful tended garden. My dad Norman gave David some lumber to build his arbours in the garden, when I returned to the hill he needed a few more to finish the garden, and just like that our trees which were from the original manor farm were spread out down the hill to make our family connections continue on and on. Our parents bought our land from his dad Jack back in 1962 and thus our families melded for 60 years. Thinking if you all. Much love the Jonasson Girls. Xoxo
