Dennis Latham Obituary

Photo by Ed Nixon LATHAM, Dennis Allister Dennis died on February 6, 2021 at the age of 80 in Victoria, BC. He would often say he had had a good life but still he didn't want to leave his wife Barbara of 54 years, whom he adored, or his beloved children Allison (Los Angeles) and Warren (Toronto). He loved his grandchildren Eric, Nate, Calandre, Sullivan and Bronwyn and marvelled at their different talents (they did all eventually figure out that despite his enduring quote "I'm Johnny Cash" that he wasn't). Playing the euphonium was his life-long love starting from when his mother signed him up for the Moose Jaw Junior Band when he was 10 years old. He could have been "the greatest there ever was" (The Natural) but as he would say, "a pizza can feed a family of four but a musician can't" so he became a lawyer where he built a successful practice based on his trustworthiness and intelligence. He believed in education - a lot of it - getting his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and his MBA and his LLB from Queen's University. He was not known for sugarcoating the truth and was willing to ask direct questions, making sure conversations with him were never boring and certainly never about the weather. He read voraciously, knew everything about baseball there was to know, enjoyed managing his stock portfolio and was always ready to watch his favourite movies again. He valued his extended family, friends and community and appreciated the love and kindness he received especially in his later years, including from Brian Sagar, Jennifer Wells and their kids Cohen and Marlowe who he thought of as family. He has left an empty seat at the table and we will forever miss him. Due to COVID19, no memorial will be held. In memory of Dennis, donations may be made to support young musicians at UVIC through the Eugene Dowling Scholarship Fund: extrweb.uvic.ca/eugene-dowling-scholarship Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallgardens.com

Mr. Latham was my baseball coach 27 years ago. He held a spot in my heart always for the life advice he had given me back then so much so that I will pass that on to my kids someday. I will fondly remember Mr. Latham smoking cigars behind the dugout, and anytime I saw him really in and out of baseball. One thing Mr Latham did for me was point me in the right direction with my education.

So sorry to hear that Dennis had passed. It was always a great day to see Dennis in his office on lunch date or the occasional round of golf . Those meeting provided either sound advice or a good time and sometimes both. You will missed.

Dennis was a good friend, associate and client. He was someone who never took life too seriously but showed great respect to anyone he came in contact with.

Dennis was Longtime friend and confidant of my late husband Thomas. He went above and beyond for my parents preparing their wills. He was generous with his time sorting out my late husbands will issues. A rare and special person.

Dennis was there in a time of need when he guided me through the probate of my father's estate. Dennis's professionalism, friendliness, good humour and generosity were greatly appreciated at a very difficult time. I was more than fortunate to have such a wonderful person
come to my aid. Please accept my deepest sympathy in these trying times.

So sorry to hear of your loss, Barb. I would often run into Dennis on the cedar hill golf course or saanich centre and last time we both had time to have a coffee and chat. He was so interested in my boys and their lives and updated me on your family that he was so proud of. He had a way of listening so intently and always had a twinkle in his eye. He will be missed. We send our deepest condolences to Barbara and family.
Dennis and I played together in the Moose Jaw Junior Band in the 1950's.
Our friendship continued as he and I spent many hours developing our musical skills and abilities while performing with many Victoria concert groups. Especially notable, was his mastery of the Euphonium and dedication to the Fifth Field Army Band. During those times he and I exchanged many thoughts and ideas concerning performance and standards ( some discussions lasting till 3 a.m. ).
Dennis epitomizes what true dedication and commitment does for the music community.
His contributions will be missed and always remembered.

Although I had worked with Dennis' wife Barb for years, my first memory of Dennis was his being the manager of my son's baseball team, which included Warren as one of the coaches. Years later I'd see him at Tuba Christmas and at Harbour Cats games. He'd always ask about my son.
More recently weekly coffees along with Pat and these started out as an hour-long and quickly grew to four but which could've been all day affairs covering, well, whatever came up. Wonderful conversation and humour has been lost.

I first met Dennis Latham at a house party where Gene Dowling was. I didn't expect to meet any musicians at my first social event in Victoria more than 20 years ago. But there I was stuck drinking beer in the low brass section, once again. You can can't avoid the warm and genuine friendship these guys bring. It lasts a lifetime after only one round. Dennis helped me above and beyond when I really needed the support the most. The standard of companionship just made the world a better place.

Dennis was a musical friend with whom I played and chatted every year at Tuba Christmas. I believe Dennis attended every Tuba Christmas from its inception in Victoria, begun by Eugene Dowling. The last time we played side by side was at Scott MacInnes' Tuesday evening brass ensembles at UVIC. Always funny and irreverent - I shall miss making music together.

I enjoyed meeting Dennis twice, once in 2019 at Tuba Christmas Victoria (photo attached) and one other time with a tuba Lawyer friend Bob Rogers of the Shoreline Concert Band about 2010 or so when our band played at Victoria Days. Delightful person to chat with and an incredible euphonium player. Rest in peace, Dennis. Hugs to your family, Jeanne Weiss, Woodinville, WA, USA

I had the opportunity to conduct or play with Dennis in a number of bands. His singular curiosity, intelligence, and wit will be sorely missed. RIP my friend.
