Donald Leppard Obituary

LEPPARD, Donald G. December 31, 1942 - August 22, 2022 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Donald George Leppard on August 22. He will be lovingly remembered by his son Jeff, (Primo), daughter Jenn, (Ethan), grandson Michael (Taylor), granddaughter Brianna (Evan), his brother Gary (Kristine), niece, Desiree, nephew, Enrico as well his partner, Mary Menzies, Mary's children and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Elaine G. Leppard in 2014 and his twin brother Ronald Leppard in 2015. Don is best known for his musicianship. A self-taught drummer by listening and emulating Buddy Rich, Don, a retired military band leader, was also a highly accomplished Big Band and Jazz musician who made music his career and his pleasure. Don led the Don Leppard Big Band and played both internationally, across Canada, and locally with other accomplished musicians such as George Essihos and in groups such as CanUS. A member of the prestigious RCAF band in Toronto, Don received his certificate of arranging from the Berklee School of Music. He also became the "pops" drummer with the Winnipeg Symphony and set drummer with the Manitoba Theatre Centre for 20 years. He has recorded more than 50 albums with various artists and taped more than 600 television shows for CTV/CBC/ITV and the Global Networks. A celebration of life to follow in a few months. Please reach out to his daughter Jenn, for details.

My sincere condolences. Don seemed to be part of every jazz event I attended. Take comfort in knowing he inspired and delighted many many musicians and music enthusiasts.

Don - you helped get me involved in the music scene when I first moved to Victoria and then we played together for over 30 years. I will remember fun times from local gigs and road trips, playing Scrabble, scribbling drum music on napkins over cups of coffee, and just your sense of humour and passion for music. You were a friend, a wonderful musician and you will be missed. My condolences to all your family. Hugs.
