Donald Edward Lobb

1940 - 2021

LOBB, Donald Edward April 25, 1940 - September 10, 2021 Don passed away suddenly from a stroke at the age of 81 years in Victoria, B. C. Born and raised in Saskatoon to the late Jack and Edna (nee Seel) Lobb. He attended high school at Nutana Collegiate and post secondary at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating from Engineering, he continued on to complete a Masters and PhD in Physics. Combining his enjoyment of travel and learning, Don pursued further research in Physics and received post doctorate degrees in England and Germany. Upon returning to Canada, he began his research and teaching career at the Physics Department, University of Victoria and remained there until his retirement. Don is survived by his sister Gloria Castelli, nieces Christine (Kevin) Bolger, Amanda (Grant) McKeracher, nephew Jason (Sabrina) Castelli and seven great nieces and nephews. Travelling and photography were central to Don's life. Many summer vacations were spent in Europe, photographing historical sites, architectural themes and rural landscapes. After retirement, Don spent winter months travelling through the Southwestern States. Arizona and New Mexico were his favourite destinations. His photographs captured the beauty and stillness of the desert landscape. His family enjoyed hearing the stories about places Don travelled to and were in awe of the unique and creative way his photography captured the essence and nature of the places he visited. Some of these photographs are proudly displayed in his families' homes and serve as a reminder of Don, his unique talents, and his love of travel. Don spent many years as the photographer and treasurer for the University of Victoria's Rugby team. He volunteered countless hours of his time to take care of the books and chronicle in pictures the story of UVic rugby. Like most of the team, he was accorded a nickname. Due to his penchant for a certain seafood, he was affectionately known among his rugby family as "Lobster." Don was an avid reader and always prepared with facts and opinions for lively discussions with his Faculty Club colleagues. Plans for a celebration of life to be organized at a future date.
