Doreen Bell Obituary

BELL, Doreen Goldie (Straub)
1932 - October 22, 2025

Mom was a truly amazing woman. She was born on 1/6th of a sharecropper's plot, a mile East of the Alberta/Saskatchewan border. She graduated high school in 1951 and in 1954 moved to Calgary to start her banking career that lasted until 1996. While retired, Mom made baby blankets for many family and friends. She also volunteered at the Broad View United Church helping out with the Thrift Shop, collecting things for donation and supported as a treasurer. For many years, Mom enjoyed the aerobics group based at the church led by instructor Agnus. Mom also enjoyed the friendships and community of the local Legion.

She is predeceased by her husband Barry Bell, brother, Lloyd and sister-in-law, Arda. She leaves behind her sons, Len (Paola) and Bill (Michelle); grandchildren, Chris, Lucas (Liz), Paolo, Grace (Matt); brother, Dwayne (Dianne); sisters-in-law, Bonnie and Marriet; as well as nieces, nephews and numerous other family members.

Mom was a strong and independent, remarkable woman who made friends wherever she went. She gave of herself to her family, friends and community. Mom's door was always open, as was her heart to support you with her ability to compassionately relate to all different generations. Even when our parties in the basement would overflow to upstairs, mom was always there to welcome you with open arms.

Our family would like to thank all of the Home Care workers, nurses (Alanna), doctors, and staff for their outstanding support. Shout out to 'the Bridge ladies' for their Friday card games and companionship that mom cherished. Mom was blessed to have the care of Victoria Hospice who made her comfortable on her transition. A quote from her cousin Beverly Fox, "Her courage and dignity in the face of her illness was inspiring."

Until we meet again.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Foundation or Victoria Hospice would be most welcome.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I was lucky enough to meet Doreen when we both worked at the same bank. Although I was only there for a couple of years many years ago I have never forgotten Doreen. She was kind, gracious, understanding, and very warm hearted. She absolutely adored her sons and spoke of them often and always with love. May she rest in peace. You have my deepest sympathy.

Doreen was a Lady in all ways....I'm sure that Barry, her Mom and Dad, her deceased family and even Uncle Len and Aunty Lila were there to meet her when she passed....she will truly be missed....

Doreen was such a vital part of the exercise class. She was so missed when she retired, but we were all so happy when she came back for our parties, always supplying her amazing ham platter!
Our collective thoughts to Doreen's family, through her we knew her boys and how much she loved her grandchildren.
I know I speak for all the exercise class when I wish Doreen safe travels.
