Doris Slater Obituary

SLATER, Doris May May 23, 1914 February 19, 2007 Died peacefully of old age at 92 at Beckley Farm Lodge. Predeceased by husband George in 1986. Survived by daughter Carole Sabiston Munro (Jim Munro), grandson Andrew Sabiston (Stephanie Martin) and great-grandson Oliver Henry Sabiston of Toronto. Born in London, England, married George in 1933. From 1931 to 1939, they rode around southern England on their motorcycles, Doris clad in her beloved dark green leathers, until George enlisted in the RAF and was gone for the next six years. Daughter Carole was born in late 1939, so Doris was the single parent. She worked in butcher shops and sausage factories all during the war and the blitz on London. It was George's wish to return to "paradise," that is, Victoria, ever since he had been based at Pat Bay with the RAF. In 1948 they emigrated to Canada, first Vancouver, then Victoria, established Slater's Meats on Cadboro Bay Road in 1955, where Doris was active behind the counter until 1974. Thanks to the caring staff at Beckley Farm Lodge, especially Brett, and to the love and support of Sheila, Jenny and Andrea. There will be no service, but on your next walk, please give a thought in her memory to the pleasure of walking, her passion. 342472

That last entry was from me. And I was wondering, can I get a copy of that fantastic motorbikin" photo?

My memories of Doris: Bright blue eyes, lively intelligence, sweet smile, her "hello dear!", all brisk and British. She was so charming and unflappable! I loved to hear her talk about wartime London, rationing, the Blitz, and all she endured with true grit.

Love to the family.

I Loved "Nanny" Slater!
She was the sweetest little lady! When I was an awkward, dopey young girl, I always enjoyed my chats with Doris because she made me feel like I mattered ... like I was a lady too! I will always cherish my "Nanny" Slater booties ... Man! That lady could knit! Ya know ... I bet she's tearing up Heaven on her motorcycle, right now!
All my thoughts and love to her family,
Marnie

"Nanny" Slater was a charming, stylish, appreciative and entertaining woman, with a characteristically English outlook on life: no complaints and certainly no self-pity. I will remember her great sense of humour, her ability to be both thoroughly game and yet dignified and, of course, her lovely smile. Lucky me to have known her.
