Dorita Grant Obituary

GRANT, Dorita Elaine (nee Palin) April 26, 1925 - November 17, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dorita Elaine Grant on November 17, 2017. Dorita was born in Victoria on April 26, 1925 to Hugh and Doris Palin. Affectionately known as "Grantie" by her large extended family, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and much loved by her family and friends. Predeceased by her daughter Dorise and survived by her husband of seventy years Marcus, sons Mark (Deborah), Ian (Sandy), Keith, Kevin (Melanie), son-in-law Don Colegrave, sister-in-law June Palin, many cherished nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dorita was an accomplished embroiderer, designer, instructor of textile art, collector of needlework and a maker of sculptured dolls. She was a proud Charter Member of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria and received her Teachers Certificate in Advanced Crewel Embroidery. Dorita taught textile arts in Victoria for many years sharing her knowledge of needlework subjects. She was also involved in writing the intermediate and advanced embroidery courses of study for the Embroiderers Association of Canada Correspondence School. She spent many years critiquing work done by students and was awarded an Honorary Life Membership for her work with the Association. Numerous examples of her creative work have been on exhibit at civic buildings, art galleries and museums across Canada. Dorita was actively involved for many years with the Girl Guides of Canada serving as a "Brown Owl" with the 34 th. Victoria Unit. Grantie was particularly fond of family gatherings and having the opportunity of assembling the large extended family to catch up on recent events. She also enjoyed her Guild get togethers where she would share recent work and ideas with her friends and colleagues. Dorita's family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, Professional Caregivers, and Volunteers who provided care, assistance and companionship. A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on December 13, 2017 at First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.

Dorita was such a generous lady with her time and talents. She helped EAC (Embroiderers Association of Canada) in many areas. She encouraged many people to enjoy the art of embroidery and will be missed by all.

I just heard of Dorita's passing and I extend my sincere condolences to her family and friends. I have so many remembrances of time spent with Dorita. I met her through the Embroiderers' Guild of Victoria and will always treasure the gift of her time that she gave so graciously to me. Dorita gave us all permission to change our work to make it more our own. To this day - when showing off a completed project - if you mention that it was someone's pattern, but you changed it a bit - this is affectionately known as a doing a "Dorita". You will well and truly be missed.

I never got to meet Dorita but one of my treasures is one of her dolls. I think I bought it at an early Sooke Fine Arts Show. Such a talented woman. My condolences to you all.
