Dorothy Shortreed Obituary

Dorothy Ferne Shortreed (nee Wiltzen) passed away peacefully on Sunday October 23, 2022 at the age of 99.

Dorothy was born in Chipman, Alberta and later moved to Leduc, Alberta. She remained in Leduc until she entered the University of Alberta Registered Nursing Program, graduating in 1945. Dorothy was keenly interested in the obstetrical specialty, enrolling in an Obstetrics program in New York State.

During Dorothy's time at U of A, she met Robert Shortreed (Bob) who was attending U of A in the Faculty of Engineering. Their love blossomed following a rousing game of Rummoli. Careers landed them in Ontario, where they were married in Guelph on July 24, 1948. In 1955 they moved to Calgary, Alberta, where they lived until retirement in 1986. They then retired to Vancouver Island in the Brentwood Bay area, until Dorothy moved to Kelowna in 2017 to be closer to family.

Dorothy was very active in many sports throughout her life. Most particularly, she was an avid competitive curler. As skip, she won the Southern Alberta Ladies Championship in 1977 and the gold medal for Senior Ladies at the 1978 Alberta Games. She continued curling until she was 92, leading her team to a 7-ender at the age of 90. Dorothy was also a keen golfer, playing until the age of 95. She not only loved sports but also loved playing bridge, bingo, whist, and hearts with her grandchildren.

While in Calgary, Dorothy was an active member of the EIC Wives (APEGGA), the Calgary Winter Club, and the Calgary Curling Club. Dorothy had a knack for keeping in touch with everyone, in particular maintaining the annual newsletter for her 1945 graduating class for 68 years. While in Brentwood Bay she was an active member of the Glen Meadows Golf and Curling Club. She was a dedicated homemaker, mother, and wife. She enjoyed various handicrafts, gardening, travelling, was a masterful home decorator, and loved entertaining friends and family. To anyone who met her she was considered a shining jewel, so kind and sweet and up for any challenge.

Dorothy was a loving and nurturing mother to three daughters, Beverly Ann (Roger) of Kelowna, Patricia Elaine of Calgary, Barbara Joanne (Alan) of Kelowna and three grandchildren Jessica (Alex) of Calgary, Robyn of Vancouver and Scott of Kelowna, as well as many nephews and nieces. Dorothy was predeceased by her loving husband, Bob, in 2010. They were married for 62 years.

Dorothy will be laid to rest beside her beloved Bob at Royal Oak Burial Park in a private family ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your charity of choice.

My husband John and I knew Bob and Dorothy through their involvement with the Mercedes Benz Club of Vancouver Island. They were a lovely couple who contributed much by their presence and graciousness towards all those who came in contact with them. They were a fine example of a loving married couple who seemed to bring out the best in each other and in others. Our sincere condolences to your family.

Dorthy was a beautiful person inside and out. As a family we enjoyed many Christmas dinners with the Shortreeds. She always made us feel so welcome in their home and we loved going there. She will be missed.
Our condolences to the family.

I had the pleasure of knowing Dorothy at Missionwood Retirement. She ate breakfast and supper every day with my Aunt Kathleen. I also joined that table many times. Dorothy was just the sweetest lady. From the first time talking to her she told me she lived on Holly Street in Calgary well to my great delight so did my Grandparents. I´m sure Dorothy would have been there at the same time. We shared the love of Shelties and birds. Condolences to her entire family. Love you Dorothy Shortreed

A most beautiful soul has moved forward into the Realms above.

I have been privileged to know Dorothy Shortreed since I was a little girl growing up on Holly Street. Her second daughter is my very oldest friend. I have many memories of the Shortreed´s Holly street home. It was always filled with Mrs Shortreed´s creative essence & love. I greatly admired her house decorating abilities which her daughters have all inherited. To this day whenever there is any holiday, my sister will say to me "Are you doing a Mrs Shortreed?"

Mrs Shortreed had so many beautiful qualities within her. Truth, strength, beauty, calmness of spirit, focus/clarity of vision, kindness, humility and of course much love. She always appeared to create, embrace & engage her life vision.Always moving forward with a cheerful spirit.

My clearest observation was the great love she showed for her dear husband & previous daughters. What a gift the Creator gave the Shortreed family.

Thankyou for the beautiful imprint you left in this world. Your creativity & constant love served the Earth well. Life´s work so beautifully done, dear Dorothy.

God Bless your lovely soul.

Love,
Janice Zingel (nee Marshall)

My condolences to all of Dorothy's family. She will be missed. I curled with her and against her for many years at Glen Meadows and loved every minute of it. I have one of her stained glass boats that she put in a silent auction at the curling club. It brings back many great memories. Cherish your memories. Lynn Gardner
