Doug SMITH Obituary

Doug passed peacefully at home under the tender loving care of his wife, Pat, and much-loved daughter, Kayla White (nee Smith). He is also survived by his son-in-law, Darren White, and three siblings and their families: Anne and Marty Kenney, Maureen and John Quested, and Bruce and Shirley Smith.
Doug was born and raised in View Royal on the property he called home for almost 72 years. Right out of high school, he apprenticed under Ed Stancil in carpentry, and went on to hold his Red Seal for 50 years. Doug became a master of his trade and worked for Dura Construction, as superintendent, on projects around the province such as the hospital in New Denver and at the grain port in Prince Rupert, and on everything from bridges and reservoirs to high rise towers. He completed his career with Townline at the buildings on the old Hudson Bay site.
He was a legend in Victoria, not only for his incredible knowledge in construction, but also his knowledge of Chevrolets.
When he was only 5 years old, his parents created a 'gear head' by giving he and his brother a 36 Studebaker for Christmas. Perhaps influenced by his parent's 39 Chevrolet, he became a Chevy man for life, owning his own '50 Chev, '53 Chev, and his high performance and much beloved '68 Chevelle (and many more!) He was very competitive behind the wheel and won many trophies 4x4 wheeling around Vancouver Island, and all over B.C.
Doug raised his daughter on construction sites, and to have the skills of a creative problem solver, as he had himself – a chip off the old (big) block.
A gathering of friends and family will be held at a later date. In his memory, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

I was fortunate to have worked with Doug on several of the Hudson Bay re-developments. He was a real pleasure to work with and instilled confidence in his excellent work. He was in a league all his own outclassing, outworking , and outsmarting guys and gals half his age. I'm honored I got to know and work with him. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Doug was always a treat to talk to. Even though I didn't see him often, when we did, we would always have a good chat about the good old days and catch up about people that we knew from the industry. I use to deal with Doug at Cubbon's in Colwood, and at Independent Concrete Ltd. Doug was a true legend and will be missed.

We are so sorry that Doug has left this world. Ed Stancil was impressed with Doug at an early stage of his apprenticeship. He built on this aptitude to gain and apply a level of knowledge in the construction trade that was exceptional. A man of few words who quietly achieved many complex objectives. Our thoughts are with you.
