Douglas Hall Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Alan Hall on August 16, 2024 in Sidney, B.C. Doug was born on September 16, 1950 and is survived by his brothers Jim (Ruth), Tom (Barb), sons Chris (Anita), Tobi (Joanne), granddaughters Kendra (Joel) and Taylor (Dawson), great granddaughter Aubrie and nieces and nephews. Doug proudly served BC Ferries for 39 years as an able seaman beginning his career on the Queen of the North and finishing his career on the Queen of Cumberland. After retiring from BC Ferries in 2008 he started working for his son Chris the very next day. Doug had his family young and raised his children with his wife Merville in Sidney. Doug was a kind, calm and gentle man. He was also a masterful handyman who could fix anything and tackled every task with patience and skill. Doug passed down his love for the sea to Chris and together enjoyed many boating and fishing trips and holidays with friends and family. They enriched each others' lives through their bond of friendship. In the later years Doug enjoyed challenging his mind over a crossword and a coffee, building model boats, maintaining his knot-tying skills, and researching family history, especially the historic abandoned mining town of Anyox, B.C. where his mother Marjorie was born. He also loved to go to Tulista Park and watch the entertaining activities at the boat ramp. As much as he will be missed, we are grateful for the many memories which we will cherish and find comfort knowing that he has reunited with his lifelong love, Merville. Family will celebrate Doug's life at a later time. Chris and Anita wish to acknowledge the professional response and empathy of the local fire, ambulance and police services and Doug's long-time friend, neighbour and co-worker from the ferries, Rick.

Doug was my best friend from Oak Bay Jr in 1965 until the last few years. My sister ask me to get her a date with Doug and the rest is this history.
We did several marine rescue together, motorsport events in high school and cruised Douglas St endlessly.
So going to keep missing you bro.

I remember Doug as the youngest of the 3 Hall sons (Jim & Tommy) when we were growing up. I lived on Transit & the Halls lived across the street on Rosario from Carole Peters & The Taylors. It is through my call to Doug in 2014-15 that I was able to make contact with Tom for our OBHS Class of 65, 50 year Reunion. Tom was able to attend the Sat. evening banquet & he told me he was always welcomed to stay over at big brother Jim's. Thank you Doug for trusting our Reunion Committee with Tom's info.

I have very fond memories of working with Doug o-n the Outer Islands routes for several years. I always found him calm, good humoured, easy to get along with and ready to take on any project. I especially recall him proudly showing me his record of the tropical fish he had kept, at a time when l was starting my own tropical tank. R.l.P. Doug, a great shipmate.
