Ed passed away peacefully at Victoria General Hospital on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the age of 94 years. He is predeceased by his sister, Zane Kotker; and survived by his wife, Jiemei Li; children Margaret (Andrew), Julie (Danielle), Sam (Katie), and James; his grandchildren Lucy, Hazel, and Amelia; nephew and niece David and Ariel.
Ed was born in Waterville, Maine to Rev. Edward Scovill Hickcox and Jean Cadwallader Hickcox. He grew up in New England. During his early career, Ed was a high school teacher and school principal. After obtaining his doctoral degree from Cornell University, Ed became a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto. He was a staunch supporter of young scholars, both students and new faculty members.
Ed dedicated his retired life to supporting Jiemei's career as they moved from Toronto, to Winnipeg, and then to Victoria for her work.
Ed loved baseball. He was a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays since the very beginning of the team franchise. He was also a fan of the Victoria HarbourCats.
Family and friends loved Ed's quick wit, wry humour and thoughtful musings. He was active at the Cordova Bay United Church, serving on the church council and committees. In his struggle with dementia and his final month in the hospital, he was surrounded by love and caring from this "extended family".

A celebration of life will be held at the Cordova Bay United Church, 813 Claremont Avenue, Victoria on November 8 at 2:00 pm.
