Edward Wright Obituary

WRIGHT, Edward Alvin
Edward Alvin Wright died in Saanich, BC December 9, 2022 at the age of 75. Born to Lillian and Ralph Wright in Vancouver on February 20, 1947.
Ed spent a memorable youth in Alert Bay, playing in marching bands and working at his uncle's well known bakery. It was in Alert Bay that Ed grew to appreciate Native Arts and Culture, which greatly influenced his life. In his teens he moved to Oak Bay and worked on honing his skills as a musician. He learned to play guitar, harmonica and valve trombone. After high school Ed enjoyed his work at VGH for 25 years in the Dietary Dept. He also loved horseback riding and playing pool.
Ed was a founding member and the front man of Blues X Five, a band that won the Victoria Battle of the Bands and opened for the Doors in the late '60s. From there he went on to play/sing in As Sheriff, Moxie, John de Conqueroo and many others. Ed was a charismatic performer who played harp, sang and was a consummate showman in the mould of his idols, Mick Jagger, James Brown and Paul Butterfield.
Later in his career, Ed adopted the stage name, Diamond Eagle, and wrote and performed (sometimes with his wife Sylvia), cutting a number of CDs. Ed was also inducted into the Victoria Music Hall of Fame.
He leaves behind his devoted, loving wife of 30 years, Sylvia Mary Hedy Wright (nee Kappert), five children, their partners and ten grandchildren: Ketha/Rob, Nissa/Brian (Ashley, Sean, Megan); Megan/Bob (Aiden, Kendra), Oliver/Jordan (Kaia), Vanessa/Michael (Lucas, Jaxon, Alice, Madeline).
Ed was very charismatic and well liked by all he met. He will be greatly missed by many band mates, too many to mention.
Ed lived life to the fullest and has left lasting memories. The world has lost a beautiful, gifted soul. His musical accomplishments have been archived on the Royal City Music Project website for all to enjoy.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2023, 1:00-5:00pm at The Loft Pub, 229 Gorge Road East, Victoria, BC.

I remember seeing Blues X Five play at Sanscha Hall in Sidney in the 60's when I was 14 or 15. So it was a treat to play with Ed in the Diamond Eagle Band more than 40 years later. RIP my friend.
