Edwin SIMPSON-BAIKIE Obituary

Ed was born on June 19, 1946 in Singapore to Helen and Bill Simpson-Baikie.
He passed away peacefully on May 21, 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Ed was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his wife Leora, his daughter Shai, son-in-law Rotem, sister Liz, and his many friends and fellow musicians.
Ed spent his happy childhood years in Victoria, BC but took off in his twenties to make his way as a musician in London, Madrid, and the Netherlands, eventually settling in Amsterdam. He toured throughout Europe, the UK, Israel and Canada, oftentimes at large festivals.
In addition to his life-long love of playing music, especially Rhythm & Blues, Ed began woodworking and became a fine craftsman of custom-made wooden furniture, including collaborations with artists. Throughout his life, Ed had a passion for sailing and, during his later years, shared the joys of sailing with people with disabilities as a volunteer at Sailability in Amsterdam. Loved by many, Ed had a gentle, warm character and always exuded calmness and positivity.
Thank you to the caring workers at the Czaar Peterpunt Care Home in Amsterdam for the excellent care they gave our Ed during the last year and a half of his life.
A celebration of Ed's life will be held in Amsterdam at a later date.

I knew Ed briefly 1965-66 when I attended UVic and met my first husband Laurie Postans. He and Ed were members of a folk group, The Wayfarers (I think!) and I remember their music in the basement of the Student Union Bldg. Laurie and I moved to Vancouver so I never got to hear As Sheriff, but a recent article in the Times Colonist about the group had a phone of Ed and his distinctive long black locks. I'm so glad he continued with the music and travel. Another member of the Wayfarers visited him in Amsterdam a few years ago. Best wishes to the family.

I saw his band As Sheriff many times in Vancouver (Retinal Circus and Big Mothers) . I've often wondered what became of him. RIP Ed.

Ed and I shared the stage in "As Sherriff" a Victoria based rock band during the late sixties. My wife Triene and I were able to join Ed and Leora for dinner at their home in Amsterdam in 2014. A perfect evening filled with memories, laughter and wine proved a highlight of our all too short stay in that remarkable city. The fact that Ed had become fluent in Dutch was a surprising revelation. Ed and Leora spoke lovingly of their daughter Shai who, unfortunately, we were unable to meet at the time. Thoughts and memories of Ed take me back to our many nights of music together, our hurtling through the streets of Victoria, his blue station wagon piled to the roof and beyond with our gear as we travelled to our next gig. Ed possessed a great voice, a mastery of his guitar and an always kind and open-hearted demeanour. He'll be a most welcome member of that great rock band in the sky. Fondly and sadly, Peter Lower
