Elaine CURLING Obituary

CURLING, Elaine C. July 08, 1946 - September 16, 2017 With dignity, clarity and swiftness, Elaine peacefully left us on Saturday, September 16, at the age of 71. Days earlier, when she learned she had cancer, she insisted that there would be 'no heroics'. She spent her last hours with family, a close friend, and the wonderful staff at the Royal Jubilee hospital. To all who knew her, Elaine was fiercely loyal and generous, a loving aunt and sister and dedicated teacher. Born in Prince Rupert and raised in Victoria, Elaine worked tirelessly teaching at Cedar Hill Junior High and then at Reynolds Secondary School where she was very involved with her students, the band program, and extra-curricular activities. She was a lover of cats, fine food, wine & whiskey, scuba diving, swimming, playing bridge and life-long learning. Both at work and in retirement, she was a passionate supporter of the arts, music and theatre. She will be sorely missed by countless club members, colleagues, students, and life-long friends. Elaine is survived by her brother Lloyd Mellor (Dana), nieces Lisa Hanna (Paul), Lindsay Mellor (Phil), & Tracey Mellor (Dylan), nephew Jay Rockwell (Judy), and their loving children & cats. We greatly appreciate the outpouring of support and love we have received from her many friends. We trust that Elaine is now with her beloved husband of 40 years, Don. We imagine them sharing morning cappuccinos and croissants overlooking the ocean, Don joking while she recounts her latest travel adventures. Elaine, you will always be in our hearts. A celebration of Elaine's life and a scholarship fund in her name will be forthcoming. Flowers gratefully declined. Donations to the scholarship fund or a charity of your choice, in her memory, are welcome.

This is a post script to an earlier message. I mentioned Elaine's daughters but just read the obituary and realize that she was talking about nieces. Hopefully, one of the nieces would like the cedar chest that Stave made. I am not quite ready to part with it but would like contact information when the times comes.

Sorry to hear of Elaine's death.
Many year ago her father made her a beautiful cedar chest. He made one for me, too, and I would like to pass it to someone in her family when I die. I talked to her a couple of years ago and she said she was giving one to one daughter and was pleased to learn that there would be a second one to give to the other daughter.
I am not ready to part with it yet but am making some changes to my will and would like to add a name and contact information.
I would like very much that the chest remains in the "Mellor" family.
My phone number is 425-482-1747 and e-mail address is [email protected].
Sincerely,
Carley Hutton

To the family of Elaine Curling,

Elaine was a new acquaintance, when she joined the Winds and Dragons Mahjong Club at the Union Club. What a very pleasant and happy player, with a keen mind for the game. I personally was thrilled as she rounded the corner into the club bar, after her morning in the gym, when she would approach the table, to join me for lunch before the game, and engage in cheerful conversation. She will be greatly missed, and I speak for all of her fellow Mahjong players. Deepest sympathies, B. Campbell

I am so saddened and shocked to learn of Elaine's passing. She was an amazing teacher and individual. She was my math teacher and student council sponsor at Cedar Hill back in the 70's. She had a way of making math fun and easy to understand. She genuinely cared for her students and taught with remarkable patience and kindness. We shared a bond that grew from teacher/ student to a friendship that lasted 37 years. She was such a thoughtful, fun, and caring friend and mentor. I will miss our annual breakfast over the Christmas holiday and our serendipitous meetings in the neighbourhood. My glass is raised to you Elaine. Blessings.

Miss Mellor taught me Social Studies at Cedar Hill Junior Secondary School. She was one of my favourite teachers among the excellent ones there. She was dedicated, funny and interesting.

So sad to hear of Mrs. Curling's passing. She was one of my favorite teachers, and math was made less difficult because of her. Mrs. C was a patient and kind person and I remember her fondly. Rest well

Elaine was a most amazing teacher, role model and person; she and Don were friends with my folks as well, so I got to know them a bit when I was still around -- and I can't help but smile when I think of that amazing couple. Anyone who knew Elaine knew how smart she was, how she cared about students and education, and what a big heart she had. My deepest condolences go out to the family.

Opimium dinners and the annual Grewar Christmas open house will not be the same without her. We were just getting over Don's abscence. She was the ying to Don's yang. Elaine's wine expertise was legendary. We were happy she found a friend to travel with in the last couple of years. We know her heart was always with Don and we hope they are enjoying an outstanding bottle of wine with dinner and a stellar whiskey to end the evening,

Shocked to hear of Elaine's passing. Don and I were childhood friends. Later when Don married Elaine, she became a friend too. We belonged to a gourmet group of couples where the men did the cooking and the women relaxed, ate and drank. Elaine also was a family friend who spent some of her valuable time with my mother Marion Davidson (Law) as she slipped into old age. Our family will miss her.

I was surprised to learn of Elaine's passing. At our annual Christmas breakfasts we heard about her work-outs at the gym and her cycling group as well as her enjoyment of fine food. It was a special friendship between the 3 of us: Elaine, Brenda and myself that started in our homeroom in grade 10 and has endured for more than 25 years. She was an amazing teacher and wonderful friend who will be deeply missed.

Just realized that Elaine passed away the day after a luncheon, just a few km. north of the Jubilee, for those of us who left UVic the year before she did. She will be remembered as an enthusiastic student and an amiable classmate in our Geography classes of those days. Our sincere condolence to all her family.
