Eric Moyes Obituary

MOYES, Eric Andrew October 26, 1915 March 3, 2009 Born in Nanking, China, to missionary parents, Eric was the third of four sons. He moved to Fifeshire, Scotland at the age of two before his family settled in Victoria in the early 1920s where he grew up. Predeceased by Helen (nee Kennedy) his wife of 56 years and brothers Jim, Horace and Ken. Eric is survived by his two sons, Alan (Nancy) and Robert (Lynne) and by grandchildren Emily and Spencer. He is also survived by nephews and nieces in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. After serving overseas with the RCAF during the Second World War, Eric went to UBC and became a forester with the BC Forest Service, a career he pursued diligently all his working life. Eric remained physically active after retirement and was a well-recognized walker in Cadboro Bay about whom many said they could set their watch when he was spotted passing by. Even into his late 80s, Eric continued to be active and independent. He followed soccer throughout his life and liked to attend local games when he wasn't busy in the garden, socializing at the Legion or touring the region by bus and ferry. In recent years, Eric was increasingly hampered by Parkinson's and deafness. After finally giving up the family home, Eric moved into Parkwood and then into Sunrise where he was well looked after during the final year of his life. Although he grumbled about the decline in his mobility and the difficulties presented by his hearing loss, Eric was a pragmatic Scot and maintained a wry cheerfulness about his situation that was recognized and appreciated by health care providers and those around him. At a recent dinner party, when it was half-jokingly suggested that the female servers at Sunrise undoubtedly found him a handful, he replied gleefully, More like an armful!" In surprisingly good health up to the end, Eric had a mild heart attack and succumbed three days later. The family is very grateful for the many kindnesses shown to Eric by his long-time physician, Dr. Stephen Roome, by the Sunrise staff, by Wendy Beck, and by all others who knew and supported him in recent months. A family memorial will be held in the spring. 529743

We are so sorry to hear of Uncle Eric's death. We had a great hour-long visit a week before his heart attack. He was in very good spirits and bright as a dollar. He walked us to the balcony and waved as we left. Uncle Eric seemed so well. Hard to believe he is gone. We are coming on the 22nd of March, will phone. Hope we can get together.

It was a pleasure to meet Eric, even under the circumstances of his last few years. He carried about a special energy that was indicative of a bounty of fortunate years. He'll be remembered fondly, and recalled to mind with much love and respect as long as my memory serves me. Best.

It was great to meet Eric and to share how your family celebrated his life when he was alive. There is something special which remains with us always when we have a parent that lives to a grand old age.
