Erich Eisenhuth Obituary

It is with profound sadness after being diagnosed with Brain Tumor 4 weeks previously that we announce the passing of Erich just 26 days short of his 89th birthday. Born in Augsburg Bavaria, Germany, Erich is predeceased by his parents, sisters, and his infant daughter Sylvia Dorothea in 1951. He is survived by his wife of 64 yrs. Johanne "Hanni", children Marion (Dan), Gordie (Sheri), Heidi, Heather (Mark), grandchildren Tiffany, Kelsey, Daniel, Harmony, Rishelle and Weston.

Erich survived WW11 as a teenager, and after escaping communist East Germany left for Canada to be with Hanni, whom he met while living in Wernigerode (Harz Mountains). With $3 in his pocket and speaking little English he travelled half way around the world to arrive in Victoria where they were married January 21, 1951.

Erich was a skilled machinist and instrument maker having worked on various aircraft, ships, machines and instruments most notably the Martin Mars Water Bombers, several BC Ferries, Canadian Naval Ships and his Dream job at "The Center of the Universe" with the NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics working on several telescopes and instruments and building the (then) world's largest Camera which was supplied to the observatory in Hawaii. www.cfht.hawaii.edu

Erich fully enjoyed life on the Island especially camping. After acquiring a property on Cowichan Lake and building his cottage he was fully content in life. He could be found puttering around, creating, building at his home and cottage. He loved animals. He enjoyed his walks with his kitties, boating, relaxing down on the beach and dock or sitting by the fire.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank Ciara, Traci, Natalie and Arlene (VGH) for your endless compassion and care. To family: Heather for assuring he knew he is deeply treasured, Gordie for his steadfast encouragement, and Heidi for dogmatically championing for him. To Harmony setting aside youthful frivolity, and choosing to honor her grandpa in his last weeks, for providing needed hugs to all, you have a soul older, kinder and wiser than your 12 years.

A celebration of life will be held at the Victoria First Church of the Nazarene, 4277 Quadra St, Victoria BC on January 10th, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. Any donations may be made to feral cat rescue www.barnratsneedbarncats.com or to BC Cancer Foundation.

Gord and Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your dad. Over the years Gord often talked about summering at the cottage at Cowichan and his dad's work at the observatory.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

We will so very much miss Erich popping over to our cottage, sharing his wonderful life stories, anxious to assist wherever he could, and enjoying the odd beer with him. He was always such a pleasure to chat with. We will miss him dearly. Our condolences to Johanne and the family.

Erich was a wonderful colleague for many years at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, where his exquisite technical skills enabled him to contribute to many world-class instruments used on Canada's telescopes. His friendly demeanour and welcoming smile were sources of joy for all of his colleagues. I am grateful for all his contributions to making it such a pleasure to work at the Observatory, and offer my sincere condolences to his family.
