Ernie EINARSSON Obituary

Surrounded by his family, Ernest Baldur Einarsson of Cobble Hill BC, passed on May 11, 2012. Born in Winnipeg in 1934 to Stefan Einarsson & Kristin Gudmundsottir, he is survived by his loving family; wife Donna, daughter Kathy (Ron), son Bill (Jodi) and daughter Heidi (Raymond); grandchildren Vanessa (Brian), Christina, Frank, Thomas, Spencer, Daniel, Jordan, Jasmine & Jennifer; and great grandchildren Olivia & Levi.

Ernie followed his father into the news business, starting his career at age 16 as a staff news & sports photographer for The Winnipeg Tribune daily newspaper and then as a TV news cameraman, first in film for CJAY and CBC and then ENG for CBC. With CBC he traveled the world and had no fear of war zones or Prime Ministers. Ernie was in South Vietnam with Peter Kent when Saigon fell in 1975. He would tell anyone from politicians to royalty how to present well on camera. He traveled to or through most of the Arctic, marking each place with pins on a huge Canadian map and probably flew in every type of bush plane. Ernie had many adventures as a photographer and was a good storyteller. A first generation Canadian of Icelandic heritage, he was a member of the Icelanders of Victoria and also of the Cowichan Valley Camera Club. He just might have kept Coca Cola in business. He loved children and they would run to him for a Mackie and a hug. Ernie had a love for life and a wry sense of humour that never left him, in spite of his medical problems.

Ernie and Donna fulfilled a dream to move to Vancouver Island in 1999, first to Cowichan Bay and then to Cobble Hill. Ernie loved his family, friends, and above all, his Lord, calling Him `The Big Fella'. Memorial Service was held on May 15, 2012 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. Please, no flowers. Donations would be gratefully accepted by the St. Andrews Church Building Fund, 531 Herbert St, Duncan BC, V9L 1T2, or to the Cowichan District Hospital, 3045 Gibbins Rd, Duncan BC V9L 1E5. Special thanks to Drs. Lisa & Jean-Marie Wilson and to the overworked nurses and staff at Cowichan District Hospital. Ernie and Donna were blessed with love and support from friends and family, too many to name; you know who you are.

Dad, not a day goes by that I don't think of you .
The car accident, there was no way I should have survived, and I know in my heart you were there saving me. There are so many wonderful and often funny memories. One thing was always certain, every time we were together, from when I was a little girl to a grown woman, you always told me how much you loved me.You were the best father, and the finest man I have ever known. I wish I had appreciated you more when you were here on earth. The obstacles you overcame, your artistic talent, and your intellect. I also remember times when I could have been a better daughter, and regret that I hurt you. Over the years we would talk on the phone and make promises to see each other soon. I wish that had happened. Sure Miss you. Say hi to the Big Guy for me. See you again someday Dad, save me a seat.

Uncle Ernie always had time to listen to a problem. Offer words of encouragement and was so supportive in our endeavours. I will always cherish my talks and walks with him, they played a big part in my life. Whenever I spoke to him and asked how he was doing he'd say "I'm damn near perfect. If I was anymore perfect I couldn't stand myself." ! Love you always. Kathryn

Donna and Family:

So sorry to hear of Ernie's passing. I enjoyed the many years I worked with Ernie in Winnipeg at the Manitoba Legislature. He was a great cameraman that kept the reporters in check. I enjoyed meeting you both when you moved out to B.C. Best wishes as you celebrate Ernie's life. Mark and Shirley Stefanson Victoria
