Ernie Fedoruk Obituary

FEDORUK, Ernie Passed away peacefully in the early morning of December 3 in Victoria at the age of 79. A loving Father, grandfather and husband Ernie was born in Vegreville, Alberta, on May 18, 1931. After his early years working as a sports reporter in Edmonton, Regina and Ontario, Ernie moved to Victoria in 1957 to join the sports staff at the Victoria Times. A beloved figure throughout the Victoria sports community as a writer with the Times and Times Colonist, Ernie loved his adopted hometown and shared his passion for local sports with everyone that he met. A gregarious gentleman with a love for conversation, Ernie befriended all who crossed his path and shared as many stories with friends and strangers as he did with all his readers throughout his 39 years of covering sports in Greater Victoria. He took a keen interest in the development of young talent and was instrumental in assisting many young Victoria athletes in pursuing their dream in their chosen sports. An avid curler and golfer, Ernie was perhaps happiest when he was out fishing on local waters, a passion that led him to write on the topic in his later role as the Time-Colonists' outdoors columnist. He found his maternal roots when he visited his Mother's family in 1991 and 2001 in the Ukraine. Ernie will be greatly missed by his wife of 55 years Eileen who cared for him through his final years suffering from Alzheimer's disease. He is also survived by his daughter Darynn who will always remember growing up at sporting events wherever her Dad would take her and his two grandchildren, Brittney and Troy who will miss so many happy times spent at Grandpa's' side. Ernie is also survived by his sister Lola Blumer (Erwin) of Edmonton, Alberta, brother in-law Jack Knill (Dee) of Victoria, and his many cousins, nieces and nephews. Ernie is pre-deceased by his brothers Michael and William Fedoruk. A special thanks from the family to all who cared for Ernie at Watson Ward, Royal Jubilee Hospital and Beckley Farm Lodge in his final years. A celebration of Ernie's life will be held Saturday, January 22 from 1-4pm at the Strathcona Hotel's Club 919 (the Old Forge to all of his friends) to share a drink and of course a story. 612338

To Ernie's family,
I never met Ernie, but as an avid salmon fisherman, I found his articles on not only fishing, but on conservation and protecting the species extremely informative and thought provoking. May someone step up and continue to carry the torch, but those shoes will be hard to fill. We have all lost a good and decent man.

Ernie we will truly miss our times together but take comfort that you are at peace. Bob and I think of you often especially when we see a sports fisherman hooking a big fish or picking up a golf club looking for that whole in one.

Ernie Fedoruk was the first person I met at the Victoria Daily Times when I started my newspaper career there in 1970. He made time to help a rookie sports reporter and for that I will always be grateful. I was saddened to learn of Ernie's passing and send my condolences to his family.
