Alan Filmer Obituary

FILMER, Alan Edward K.C.
Alan died suddenly, but peacefully, at home on the morning of Christmas Eve. He is survived by Margaret, his loving wife of 60 years, his son Cam (Helena), daughter Megan (John), and grandchildren Caileigh and Katherine Filmer, and Cara and Alan McLachlan.
Born in Nanaimo in 1937, he attended U.B.C. where he earned a B.Comm and Law Degree. He met his wife, Margaret, when both were in their final years of university. They married that same year, 1963, with the reception on the front lawn of her parents, Jean and Ted Baynes.
Alan had a distinguished law career, starting as defence lawyer and Crown Counsel in Nanaimo, Regional Crown Counsel in Vancouver, and then Assistant Deputy Attorney General in Victoria, where he was awarded a Queen's Counsel.
In 1988, Alan was appointed as a BC Provincial Court Judge where he served for 20 years. Here, he was respected by all for his courtesy, innovative thinking, and work ethic. Both in criminal and civil cases, he listened carefully and helped to guide the parties to a fair and equitable solution. He was dedicated to supporting a justice system that ran smoothly, efficiently, and compassionately.
At home, Alan was a keen lifelong golfer, enjoying the game and camaraderie for many years with his special chums at Uplands Golf Course. He also loved the game of bridge, both duplicate and social, which he played right until the week before his death. He was devoted to his family, whose hearts and lives have been enriched and strengthened by his steadfast love, wicked sense of humour, and wise advice.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Judge Filmer. I appeared in his court many times over the years as both defence and Crown Counsel. He treated everyone with the utmost respect and had a strong sense of the practical approach to each situation. Defendants and litigants felt they had been heard when they left his courtroom. My condolences to his family, Judge Filmer was a fine judge and a fine man.

My condolences to the family. I played golf with Alan on the UBC golf team in 1956. In trying to qualify for the team during early spring, we played together on frozen greens and where frost would build up on the ball when putted. I remember that he had a great sense of humour and was always fun on and off the course. As we travelled through the Pacific Northwest playing against American colleges, Alan was the spirit of the team. Lots of good memories. We won the Evergreen Conference Cup for golf that year. I had not spoken to Alan since. May he rest in peace. Dr. Don Carlow

Loving, sensitive, smart, generous, tough and lotsa fun. Just a tremendous human being. Al had a massive influence on my professional and personal lives with his steadfast support and wise counsel.
I am so lucky to have had him in my life and the public so lucky to have enjoyed his dedicated service all those years. They broke the mould after Al. One of a kind.
Rest easy mate. You´ve earned it.
My heart goes out to you Maggie and to all the Filmer clan.

I knew Alan when he was ADM in the Ministry of Attorney General in the 1980´s.

The ADM position has a wide scope and daily challenges.

He was an enjoyable guy to deal with, always well prepare and articulate as to how the law should be applied in any situation.

He was a great public servant. One of the very best.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Condolences Cam, Helena and family. It sounds like he was truly a blessed man in so many ways. Take comfort in each other´s memories of your Dad. I´m sure there will be plenty of stories from family, his friends and colleagues that will come to light in the days ahead, which will augment the memories of all the special family times I know you shared, and will help pull you through this especially difficult time and bring a smile to your heart, now, and whenever you need it most.
