Frederick Burd Obituary
BURD, Frederick Walter (February 5, 1922 August 16, 2008) Professor Emeritus and Honorary Fellow, Huron University College (University of Western Ontario) and Senior Honorary Fellow, Renison College (University of Waterloo). Peacefully in Comox, B.C., after a head injury. Frederick Burd, cherished husband of Penelope Anne (Runkle) for 60 years and greatly loved and admired father, father-in-law and grandfather of Hilary and David Dell, Simon and Trevor; Martha Burd; Geoffrey and Beverly Burd, Sarah (Matthew Breary), Heather, Emily and David; Christopher Burd and Mary Munro, Hugo and Griffin; Rosemary Burd and Gordon MacKenzie, Hannah and Alyson; and Matthew Burd and Kelly Hall, Rowan and Madelaine. Fred is survived by his sister Helen (David St. Clair) and family and was predeceased by his brother Lieut. Oliver Burd, RN, who died in 1948 while serving with the British Antarctic Survey. Fred was the elder son of the Rt. Rev. Walter Burd, Sixth Bishop of Saskatchewan, and Elizabeth Millington. A veteran of the Second World War, he served as 2nd Lieutenant (later Lieutenant) in the Royal Canadian Artillery and transferred to the British Army in 1944 under the Canloan scheme, joining the Grenadier Guards (Guards Armoured Division). A graduate of the University of Toronto, Fred became a clinical psychologist with the Department of Veterans Affairs and began his teaching career at Mount Allison University, New Brunswick in 1957. In 1960 Fred joined the newly established Faculty of Arts at Huron College, University of Western Ontario, where he was successively Head of the Psychology Department, Dean of Arts for thirteen years, and in the last two years of his career, Acting Principal. Retiring to Denman Island, B.C. in 1987, Fred was active in the Denman Island community, especially St. Saviour's Anglican Church. He enjoyed good music, single malt scotch, cryptic crosswords, books, and bridge. Fred had a rich tenor voice, and sang in church choirs throughout his life, in the Hart House Glee Club, and in Denman Island's Harmonia Mundi. In a life shaped by love and service, he was intensely proud of his family, his association with Canloan and the Grenadier Guards, and his contribution to Huron College. Following a family service at St. Saviour's Church on Saturday, September 6, there will be a reception for friends at the Denman Seniors' hall at 3 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the F.W. Burd Scholarship, Huron University College (London, Ontario), or St. Joseph's Hospital Palliative Care (Comox, B.C.). 493546
