Gary Bishop Obituary
Gary Wilfred Bishop
July 16, 1938-November 15, 2025
Gary passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025 at the age of eighty-seven in Victoria, BC. Born in Victoria in 1938 to Harry and Clara (Oddy) Bishop, he was the second youngest of six children. Despite the challenges and hardships his family faced as a result of the untimely death of his father when he was only three years old, Gary was determined to create a life for himself.
His love of sport brought him the discipline, friends, community and opportunities he needed as a young person. Baseball was his game and he loved to share stories of when he and his brother played together, "the Bishop Brothers".
Gary met his beloved partner Joan through mutual friends and was married in 1962, embarking on a journey together that spanned over six decades - a testament to their deep bond. Together, they raised three children, Gary Jr. (Rachel), Janette, and Terri (Tod), who blessed them with their grandchildren, Hayden (Katie), Ari (Marshall) Angus and great grandson Walter, although sadly, the family suffered the loss of their daughter Terri in 2019.
After high school, Gary embarked on an apprenticeship in metal fabrication, ultimately establishing his own successful business in 1974. He exemplified hard work, honesty, and reliability, serving as a steadfast provider and protector for his family. Though a serious fall in 1981 impacted his health, Gary remained resilient until the physical demands of work became too great a decade later.
In retirement, Gary and Joan enjoyed a vibrant life on Vancouver Island, moving between Duncan, Courtney-Comox, Nanaimo and Ladysmith, adapting their homes to match Joan's artistic pursuits. Gary loved to play cards and golf as it was a great way to meet new people and make new friends.
In April of 2022, both Gary and Joan moved to Mount St. Mary, where they continued to seek comfort in each other's presence. Sadly, Joan passed away in June of 2024, leaving Gary with a profound sense of loss after sharing 61 beautiful years together.
As we reflect on Gary's life, we remember a man defined by his love for family, sports, and community. His legacy will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of all who had the pleasure to know him.
The family would like to acknowledge the incredible and compassionate care that Gary received from the entire team of Hope House at Mt. St. Mary's with special thanks to Milan, Julieta and Suiti.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Uplands Golf Club on January 15, 2026 from 2:00 to 4:00
