Gary Robertson Obituary

ROBERTSON, Gary
Born June 9th, 1944; passed on March 12th, 2024. Husband to Dayle; Father to Leanne (Rob) & Shane (Kelly); Grandfather to Jessica (Nik); Jamie (Dustin); Ryan; Step Grandfather to Chad, Courtenay and Maddy. Great Grandfather to Kingstyn and Oaklynn. Affectionally referred to as "Dad" or "Pops" to many. Gary spent most of his career in the classrooms of Spectrum and Reynolds. He was firm but fair with students, colleagues and administrators. He served the teachers of Victoria as President of the Teachers' Union and on the Executive of the BC Teachers' Federation. Prior to teaching Gary was in the Royal Canadian Navy as a fleet entry apprentice ERA. He served for 8 years and participated in the embargo of Cuba as well as the movement of Army personnel and equipment to Cyprus at the start of the UN peacekeeping mission. Gary loved the water. Along with Dayle, they lived aboard their sailing vessel "Forever & Ever" for 11 years. They travelled extensively from the Queen Charlotte Islands to Mexico. In addition to his love of sports, Gary enjoyed motorcycling and cherished his HD Ultra Classic. But his pride and joy was his 1964 Comet Caliente convertible. In his final years, Gary and Dayle enjoyed exploring North America in their RV. Life was an adventure to the end. Gary was a Freemason having joined Goldstream Lodge in 1983 where he served as Master for two terms. He was chosen as District Deputy Grand Master for the Grand Lodge of BC & Yukon in 2007, a position he filled with pride. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Church of the Advent, 520 Mt View Ave., Colwood on April 5th, 2024, at 14:00 hours. There will be a Masonic component and all Masons are asked to wear their aprons under their jackets with no collars or jewels. No flowers by request.

Gary was my first boss when I started working for School District 61 in the Health and Safety Department back in 1990. I remember him well as a large gentle teddy bear (as I am short in stature). He was a very nice, kind man. Gary even treated a group of us to a sail on his boat one day. I was saddened to hear of Gary´s passing and send condolences to his family.

We'll always remember you Gary. Bigger than your stature was your solid presence in our family and lives. You'll remain with us in perpetuity.

Some of my best memories at Reynolds are from my three years taking Mr. Robertson's mechanics classes. A very patient and intelligent man. My condolences to the Robertson family.

Dayle and family we would like to extend our sincere condolences. Gary will be missed.
One of our best memories of Gary and Dayle was when we saw their sailboat, Forever and Ever, from our condo window in Cabo St. Lucas. We took a Panga out to their boat! They were very surprised! A special day to remember.

Dayle, our sympathy to you and your family. We have fond memories of shared good times sailing and talking about the car on walks to Thetis when the garage door was up and Gary was tinkering with it.

Gary was one of a kind. I had so much respect for him as a person, as a devoted teacher and union man. His advice was solid, well thought out and to the point. I was the beneficiary of his advice many times. He will be very much missed.
