George Baker Obituary

Loving husband and father George Malcolm Baker peacefully passed away on July 15, 2022. George lived a full and remarkable life, shared with his loving wife of 66 years, Kathleen (née English), and his children, Randy, Denise and Brad. He will be remembered for his kindness and love for his family and friends, his intelligence, work ethic, and passion for aviation.

George was born on June 26, 1933 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. To satisfy his early desire for adventure, he joined the RCAF in 1953 as an Air Navigator. Flying the Canso, he participated in the mapping of northern Canada. On the Dakota and North Star, he travelled the world on long-haul air mobility flights. In 1957, he married his childhood sweetheart Kathleen in Vancouver, where she was working as a nurse.

George converted to air traffic control in 1962 to spend more time at home with their growing family. Still in the RCAF, they spent years in Germany and Sardinia, and in Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba. Lifelong friendships were established and maintained long after George retired from the regular force in 1980.

Kay and George then moved to Victoria, where George joined the Air Reserve and Kay opened her bookstore. Finally retiring from the Air Force for good in 1987 as a LCol, he spent the rest of his retirement golfing, working part time with Camosun College, and supporting Kay's very successful book business.

The long years in Victoria were filled with travel, family, and friends. George avidly supported the aviation museum and devoted countless hours to archiving and cataloging aviation history through thousands of hours of video conversion, and by participating in the museum's living memory project.

A devoted father, husband and grandfather, George was loved by all. An accomplished self-taught electrician, carpenter, plumber and mechanic, he could fix anything, and will always be remembered for being the glue for the family in all respects.

George is survived by his wife Kathleen, his children Denise and Brad, their spouses George and Cathy, and his grandchildren Ryan, Kyle and Alex Baker. His son Randy predeceased him in 2018. A service will be held in the fall.

My sincere condolences to Kathleen and family. Many of us in knew George as an outstanding instructor at the ATC School in Camp Borden during a 1972 IFR course. In 1976 we welcomed Major Baker and his trade expertise to CFB Portage as the new Base ATC Officer. We wished he had been able to stay with us for a much longer time. He was a talented officer, a gentleman, a family man and a friend.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my Grandfather. I am above all, however, thankful for the times that we shared and for the wisdom and humor that he imparted. I am so very grateful to have had such an amazing Grandpa. I can earnestly say that he helped shape who I am today for the better.

I will never forget you, and will cherish your memory always.

My mother, Glenda, came across this beautiful tribute in the paper today and shared it with me. Although I only knew Uncle George a short time, my mom and I have spoken of him and the entire Baker family with great fondness over the years. We are so very sorry for your loss and to read about Randy's passing. We are also on Vancouver Island and send the entire family our love.
