George Lohr Obituary

George Reginald Lohr (Smooky) passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on May 6th, at Veterans Memorial Lodge, Victoria, BC surrounded by his loving family. Born to Kathy and Harold Lohr on March 31st, 1926, George grew up on the farm in the Prospect Lake area with brothers Alf, Doug and David and sisters Kathleen, Edith and Muriel. At a young age George showed his entrepreneurship with raising Flemish Giants and harvesting medicinal Cascara to help support the family. George signed up for active service in the Canadian Army at the age of 18 and was sent to CFB Shilo, Manitoba to be trained on the 'big guns'. Soon after leaving service, George met the love of his life, Gwendolyn Helen Griffin. They married on May 6th, 1949 and proceeded to grow their family. Survived by son, Stephen (Sharon) and daughters Debbie (Fred) King, Denise (Rick) Drobott, and Janice (Glenn) Brenan, eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Muriel (Martin) of Victoria and brother David of Port Hardy. George's talents were many, which included being a master at carpentry. He built his family home at Prospect Lake in 1950 - 51, and lived there for many decades. He loved his hunting dogs and raised purebred German Short-hair Pointers. He was an avid beekeeper and grew Logan berries to take to market. He was a highly respected hunter and fisher, passing on his expertise to his son and his buddies. George's long served employment was with school district 63 maintenance department, where he honed his talents in carpentry and locksmithing. George retired as the Physical Plant Supervisor in 1984 and was proud of being instrumental in forming union membership for his fellow employees in the early days. Thank you dad for our wonderful lives, we love you and miss you.

Many thanks and much gratitude to the caring staff of Veterans Memorial Lodge, Broadmead. No flowers by request, donations can be made in George's name to the Veterans Memorial Lodge, Broadmead.
A private service will follow at a later date.

As a young brother (25 years difference) I would walk from the homestead on Lohr Road to George and Gwens house (about a kilometre) and Steve would walk out and we´d walk through the short trail to the old Prospect Lake school from grades 1 to 5. Gwen would care for me after school till mom picked me up. I spent lots of time in George´s house and on the property playing in the creeks and such. George and Gwen have a close loving family that a lot of people would be envious of. I have a heart full of fond memories to keep with me

A truly incredible man who lived a beautiful life. I always enjoyed visiting him, even if only for a short time throughout my years growing up. He used to enjoy the deer that wandered through his yard every morning, and I remember him saying, "I only shoot them with my camera now." He was always kind to us, and we always enjoyed our time with him. My heart goes out to his family. Steve and Sharon, thank you for carrying that kindness forward.

Hi Karen, Oh my goodness it so lovely to hear from you! Your message brought tears to my eyes as those memories of our childhood days came back. Mom's dog's name was Tonya and Dad's fave dog was Max. I too have wonderful times at your parents place roaming around your property and remember the cows chasing us? I really looked up to your Mom & Dad, he was so handsome. Thank you for reaching out Karen and for your kind words.

Hi Janice. My condolences to you and your family for the loss of your dear father at 99! What an amazing life he had. I´m so sorry you lost your mom some years before.
I have such fond and precious memories of your family, all the time we were such close friends. I loved being at your home and sitting at your kitchen table talking to your mom and sisters, your mom´s little dog (I can almost remember her name), picking raspberries and playing around the creek. I still remember your phone number!
I hope you find comfort in all your memories at this sad time.
Karen Peddlesden.
