SETTERFIELD, George Ambrose (FRSC) August 29, 1929 March 15, 2008 Died at home in Victoria after a short illness. George is survived by his partner Roslyn Grey; his five children, Tom (Penny), David, Jen (Nancy), Wayne (Carrol) and Chris, and their mother Diana; his sister Gwendolyn; five grandchildren and one great grandchild. George was born in Halifax and went to school in Victoria. He completed an undergraduate degree in biology at the University of British Columbia and a PhD at the University of Wisconsin. He moved to Ottawa, where he worked at the National Research Council and then Carleton University. He was professor of biology at Carleton until 1985 when he retired to Victoria. During his stay in Ottawa he was a member of many scientific societies and published over 75 papers in scientific journals. An avid photographer, he exhibited in Ottawa, Toronto and Victoria, winning several awards in juried shows. George loved the outdoors; he bicycled (a member of the CCTS), kayaked, canoed, hiked and skied cross-country. Remembered fondly by his former colleagues and his many students, who were inspired by his passionate teaching style. 453791
