Gladys Dawe Obituary

DAWE, Gladys Edna (nee Mackintosh) 12/15/1920 - 1/19/2015 Gladys was born to William Robert Mackintosh (born in Victoria, BC in 1895 and fought overseas during WWI) and his wife Ruby Catherine and was the older sister to Robert W. Mackintosh. She was predeceased in 2011 by her very loving husband, William Albert Dawe, who fought overseas during WWII. They were married in Victoria, September 15, 1942 after both attending Victoria High School. They made their home in a house Bill built on his return from military service and it is still the family home today. Gladys is survived by her twin daughters, Julie Bailey (late husband Bryan), Janie Jolley and husband Wayne with their children Melinda Jolley and husband Adrian Mohareb, Nathan Jolley and wife Charlotte and their son (great-grandchild) born April 2013, Skonun Quin Jolley and Gladys' youngest daughter Susan Fisher and husband Mark with their son, Tom Fisher. Other cousins, nieces and nephews in Canada, England and Scotland. Gladys had a remarkable life: submerging in the RCN's Grilse and getting her dolphin badge, going online at 81-years old with her own computer, making her granddaughter Melinda's cake for her September 2014 wedding and riding on the front of the two wheeler with James from The Priory two days after her 94th birthday to see Christmas lights with her crash helmet on! AND she knew all the words to "Help Me Rhonda." She was a very accomplished stenographer and bookkeeper. Once all her girls were in Junior High School, she returned to the work force where she excelled with lots of military secrets kept in shorthand. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and cooking, being well trained by the nuns of St. Ann's Academy where she went to post graduate training for all of her skills. Her Scottish heritage allowed her to make the best shortbread, trifle and apple pie. Gladys could jump start the car, bail the boat and can peaches from her tree and always owned her own car! And we know where the car is! Gladys will be laid to rest beside Bill Dawe at Royal Oak Burial Park. A tea and service will be at Royal Oak Burial Park's Chapel, January 24, 2015 at 12:30pm with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church officiating. A family interment will follow. Her family would like to sincerely thank all the caring staff at The Priory for their outstanding efforts keeping Mum entertained, healthy and happy. Thank you all.

My sisters - Tricia and Michelle - and I always loved Auntie Gladys and Uncle Bill. While they were not blood relatives, they did just fine as extended family - hosting lots of dinners, picnics and a few very special outings on their boat. Auntie Gladys was always a bit mysterious - seeming more elegant and authoritative than most of her contemporaries. And she was both funny and tart! What a fabulous life she had too. I think she was the last of the old guard for my family, and we'll miss her.

I have fond memories of working with Gladys. Smart, witty, independent and very caring of her family, as well as people and other residents in general. An unforgettable woman who always made me smile. Yes Janie and Julie, we do know where her car is...and I believe she's found it ;^)
