Gordon LEE Obituary

Gordon, a well-known local professional photographer, left us on October 14, 2021.

Gordon had lived in Victoria BC all his life. Ever since he was a child, he had developed a strong interest in photography. During his teenage years, he could be seen shooting 8mm movies at events all over town and snapping photos everywhere.

He attended the Western Academy of Photography in the late 80s, and eventually established his own professional photo studio in 1991, specializing in portraits and weddings.

With the digital technology evolution, Gordon adapted very quickly and successfully transformed his business model from analog to digital and continued to invest heavily into the latest and greatest photo gear and printing facility.

With his high caliber equipment and his endless energy, he established a reputation among his clients that he could tackle any kind of assignments any time, any place, wherever there were sports events.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Yut Chor. He will be greatly missed by his mother, Chung Mee, brother, Wyman (Sandy), nieces, Janet (Mike), Stefanie (Eric), and Caitlin, grandnieces, Natalie, Selena and Aliyah, an uncle and numerous aunts, cousins, and friends.
A private service will be held. A celebration of life will be held in the future.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to KidSport Greater Victoria.

Gordon was a great help to me after graduating WAP, just 2 or 3 years after he did. He was always available to answer a question or lend a hand. We lost touch when I moved to the Maritimes for 15 years and its unfortunate we didn't get to reconnect. My condolences to the family.

I was so very shocked to hear about Gordon’s passing.I met Gordon in 1995 when he took modelling pictures of my then 4 and 9 year old sons, since then i have been his hairdresser and every time he always asked about my boys how they are doing and what they were up to,he was such a lovely genuine guy, I was on vacation at the beginning of this month and sadly missed him coming in for his haircut. My family sends our deepest condolences to the family.

To the Lee Family,

I was deeply saddened to learn of Gordon's passing. While at Camosun College in the early 1980's, he became a good friend of my late husband, Brian; and through Brian, Gordon became a treasured friend to me. Together with John and Mel, Jim, Rose and David, "our circle" enjoyed badminton nights at Henderson, themed dinner parties and even a camping weekend at Horne Lake. In 1986, Gordon and Brian embarked on an epic road trip to Thunder Bay, with Gordon travelling on to Montreal. I joined him on the return leg to the Westcoast stopping along the way in Saskatoon to visit Rose and then on to hike in the Rockies. Although I haven't seen Gordon in many years, he remains an important part of my history. For the better part of a decade, he was an integral part of my social circle. I feel incredibly fortunate to be gifted with many of his early photographs (including my wedding album). I warms my heart to know that during his lifetime, Gordon achieved legendary status as a local sports' photographer, garnering respect and admiration from so many. There is no doubt he will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Mrs. Lee and Wyman, may the love and support of your family and friends help to carry you through this very difficult time.

So sorry to learn of Gordon’s passing. Living three doors away on Bay Street, I was often sent to buy tobacco & cigarette papers for my grandfather. Gordon & Wyman were often there helping out. As they grew older, Wyman was soon operating the cash register with Gordon looking over his shoulder & Mrs Lee keeping an eye on both of them. The family & store was an integral piece of the neighbourhood.

I first met Gordon when he was the photographer for the annual triathlon/duathlon held at Elk Lake every summer. He did a great job and everyone was very enthusiastic to see his photos after the event. I met him again later taking pictures of the Victoria Cougars playing in Esquimalt and also at the old timers hockey games where he would take team and individual pictures and then set up a table to sell them to the players. Later i asked to take a Club photo of our speedskating club in Esquimalt and he did so for a couple of years ,always doing a super job at a generous fee.I got to know Gordon quite well over these years and when I would see him at the rink we would stop what we were doing and have a chat. It was obvious he loved what he was doing. He always greeted me with a smile and a hand shake. So,so sad to hear of his passion. He was one of a kind.

It’s sad news to lose such an outstanding photographer and friend. I started retouching and assisting Gordon when I was still at the Western Academy of photography in 1996. We remained in touch after I moved away and he always had an interest in how my career was progressing and he loved talking about all the technical gear and programs. My condolences to his family (he often spoke of his family while I sat retouching on his ping pong table)

Dear Wyman and Mrs. Lee,
Gordon was such a lovely person. We'd occasionally run into each other on the street and have a chat and he'd update me on the career that he truly loved. My fondest memories of Gordon come from our youth, both at Vic High and at your family's store where I was sure to find Wyman and Gordon. Your family was so very kind to my mom and she regularly shopped at the store. I'm so very sorry for the loss of your son and brother and send my deepest sympathies to you.

Mr Gordon was our studio photographer for many years at Karen Clark Dance Studio. He was a lovely man, always kind, patient and we all enjoyed working with him. He spoke often of his Mom and Family. It didn't matter what idea we would come up with Mr Gordon could make it work. Over the years he watched many of our Dancers grow up. He was so good at recognizing them even though he only saw them once a year. We are so saddened to hear of Mr Gordon's passing and send our deep condolences to his Family, Friends and all those that had the pleasure of working with him. Rest easy Mr Gordon, you will be missed - I hope you know how much!
