Gordon THOMSON Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gordon Russell Thomson on October 29, 2025.

Gordon was born in Vancouver, BC to Charles and Doris Thomson (nee Shields); he was predeceased by his sister Carol. Gordon is survived by his loving wife and partner of 37 years Barbara, daughter Wendy, step-children Graham (Lindsay), Ashley (Rich), and his beloved grandson Charlie.

Growing up in Vancouver and then Trail, BC, Gordon later returned to Vancouver to study history and education at UBC. He went on to a long and respected career with WorkSafeBC in the Claims and Review Division. Wherever he went, Gordon was adept at making friends. He was always the first to extend a quiet hand up to anyone in need. His colleagues appreciated his professional work ethic and depth of knowledge. Friends and colleagues alike enjoyed his sarcastic wit and sense of humour. He sometimes presented a gruff exterior to those not fortunate enough to know the kind, gentle and generous soul he truly was.

He will be dearly missed by his lifelong friends Rick and Marnie, as well as Simon, Janice, Gary and the beer gang, and so many others. More than anything, Gordon cherished his family, and he was so proud of each of them. He was the best partner, always supporting and following Barbara in her various passions, including 15 years of fly-fishing throughout BC together (flying and hiking into remote lakes) and kayak camping along Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Road trips throughout BC were a favourite pastime for the couple, especially to wine country and the Kootenays.

Gordon took up running in his late 30s and it became a passion for him for years. He completed 14 marathons, including the Boston Marathon. His personal best was 2:42:42. In his later years, he was a regular fixture in the neighbourhood he loved, taking long daily exercise walks, rain or shine. Gordon greatly enjoyed his home and puttering on house projects, as well as helping his family with their own home improvement projects. One of his greatest joys, and a truly unexpected delight, was the relationship he formed with his young grandson. Charlie will miss his "Bumpa".

Gordon is loved and missed, and will remain in our hearts forever. What a wonderful life. We are most grateful for the kind care of Dr. Gagnon, Dr. MacNaughton, and the palliative care team. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be considered to BC Cancer or the Canadian Red Cross.

Gordon was my neighbour and friend since 1948, when we were both compelled to play outside by our mothers. Over the years, we remained good friends, and I learned that he was very intelligent, and perceptive. He was always willing to look the other way if I made a mistake. He also was remarkable in knowing not only what was the right thing to do, but then doing just that. He will be sorely missed.

Barb and Family, I am truly sorry for your loss. Gord was a valued friend and colleague. We had numerous talks over the years usually focusing on our employment/employer/employees.He was always so witty and spirited. I always totally enjoyed our time together. He will be greatly missed.

Gord and I had so many good pub chats which were both fun and good for the soul in hard times. His sardonic wit could drive some to confusion ,while I invariably laughed my guts out. I will miss Gord as my long term friend but will always remember our good times together, recognizing they don't make many like him anymore. To Barbara and family we send our love as always. , Simon and Betty Stubbs

We´ll miss Bumpa too but hope Charlie and Barbara will still be our neighbours for a long, long while.

Gordon was a wonderful person.

Best.
