Grace NICKELS Obituary
Our loving matriarch, the Amazing Grace Nickels, left us peacefully November 20, 2023. It is impossible for us to imagine a world without this little firecracker. We rejoice in the fact that she lived a happy, independent life right up until her last few days. Mom leaves behind her loving sons, Dale (Kathy) and Brian (Deanna) as well as her precious grandchildren Brad (Shona), Robyn, Nicole (Gzerod) and Chris, her niece, Bev, numerous family members, loving friends and caring neighbours. Grace was predeceased by her loving husband, Marty, with whom she shared 66 wonderful years. Grace was born and raised in Saanich and lived her entire life there. G-Ma loved to tells us tales of days gone by and marveled at just how much the world around her had changed in her 100 years.
Grace found her true joy making those around her happy. A meal at Grace's was always memorable and she got immense pleasure from knitting for countless friends, family and babies. Her real passion, though, was BAKING. Cookie Power is a real thing and Grace got an appointment with anyone, anytime with the simple promise of a plate of her exceptional treats. At Christmas she baked literally hundreds of dozens of perfect shortbread to give away to lucky recipients. Always up for a game, Grace loved her scratch tickets, the Wonder Word, the Canucks and the Blue Jays. She was a master at crib and we will forever cherish her little smirk and a giggle when she skunked anyone who was brave enough to challenge her. She'd be thrilled to know she left us on a winning streak.
Mom felt very fortunate to have lived a long life and to have lived it well. She was always appreciative of the love and support that surrounded her on a daily basis. We are forever grateful to her wonderful friend and caregiver, Kim, as well as the legion of friends and neighbours who helped us keep Grace happy and healthy in her own home for so long. We also want to recognize her doctor, Matthew Ward, as well as the staff of Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their exceptional care and compassion in Grace's final days.
There will be no service at this time but we will celebrate Grace's amazing life when the spring comes and the flowers bloom. If desired, please consider a donation to Jeneece Place, Saanich Peninsula Hospital or any charity of your choice.
While she may be gone from our sight, she will forever remain in our memories -- waving at the window.
