Grant MacDonald Obituary

MacDONALD, Grant Wilson March 15, 1946 - April 29, 2015 Our hearts are heavy with the passing of Grant Wilson MacDonald who lost his courageous fight while in hospice. Grant was born in Sarnia, Ontario and moved to BC as a young boy, spending his youth in Mission BC. After finishing his education, he moved to Prince George where he trained as an auto mechanic and married Betty, mother of their two children. Years later, Grant moved to Victoria and in 2006 he met his soul mate, Mary Smart. They had 9 wonderful years together, travelling and cruising to various places, such as Scotland, Ireland, England, and the US, including Disneyland and Hawaii. They became inseparable ballroom dancers and attended many Masonic, Shriner and Order of the Eastern Star venues. Grant was in his element building lasting memories during this time. He was a long-standing member of the Saanichton Masonic Temple. He was devoted to many philanthropic endeavours and could be spotted representing the Shriners in many local parades. He also received the distinguished recognition of Worthy Grand Patron. Grant was a well-known Brother with the Saanichton branch of the Shriners. He often devoted time taking sick children by special bus to the Shriner's Hospital whenever he was needed. His career included many years of civil service with the provincial government, retiring in 1997. Grant leaves behind his loving partner and best friend Mary and her family. He will be missed by his children, Shean (Danielle) of Port Moody, Jeannie (Tim) and granddaughter, Victoria of Prince George as well as Grant's loving siblings; brother John (Kathryn) and their daughter living in Scotland, sisters Violet, Dawn, Joan and her 2 children, and Francis (Ron), their 7 children and granchildren. Grant was a well-informed, formal and self-educated man who loved people, conversation and history. He was very proud of his children and the last 9 years of his life that he shared with Mary, whom he loved dearly. A Memorial Service followed by a tea will be held at the Saanichton Masonic Temple, on Friday, May 29 at 1:30 pm.

Mary, I am so sorry to hear of Grant's passing - such wonderful memories in dance classes - by far the best couple on the floor... and some wonderful conversations about my beloved late Uncle Walter Phillips - also a long time and honoured Mason - Loved to hear of your travels to Scotland, your visit to the Rosslyn Chapel and the adventure in seeing that very historic 15th century Templar chapel...a most interesting and fascinating conversation - May your years of wonderful memories with Grant help you through this very difficult time - God Bless!

My family is saddened to hear of Grant's death and will always be thankful to him. I met him in the Save On Foods parking lot in Sidney 12 years ago. He was selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Shriner's. We struck up a conversation and I mentioned that my daughter was on a waitlist for orthopedic surgery at Children's Hospital. She had been on the list for 10 months. That evening, he came to our home to meet my daughter with some paperwork to fill out for Shriner's Hospital. Two weeks later, we were on a flight to Portland for testing. The following week, we were called back to Shriner's Hospital for surgery. Our daughter is now a healthly, happy 23 year old. For years afterwards, I would bump into him in Sidney and he always asked how she was doing. We will treasure the kindness and compassion he showed our family. I'm sure there are many others who will do the same.
