Hadyn Thomas Obituary

It is with heavy hearts but the greatest of memories that we announce the sudden passing of Hadyn Thomas. Hadyn was a very proud father of Moira, Evan and Isla, loving brother to Victoria Ashmead and Wayne Thomas and caring friend to so many. He was a remarkable man, blessed with a gift for words and a zest for life. His presence and energy was unmistakable, his personality truly distinct and extraordinary. We will all dearly miss his smile when he enters the room, his sense of humor, love of family and friends and his strong sense of community. A celebration of life for Hadyn will be held at a later date.

I will always remember Haydn arriving as a new student at my high school. He stood out - and not just because he was wearing saddle shoes with his distinctive sartorial flair. He was witty, smart and a genuinely nice guy. Flash forward to more recent times when he appeared again, spending time with one of my longtime friends Lyn Collis, and was included in our annual pre-Xmas get-together with other friends. I am stunned that he is gone though we all knew he had serious health issues. But he never dwelt on them; he was just charming, funny, generous and such a good conversationalist. And always well-dressed. I feel very sad that his bright spirit is no longer part of our world. He will be missed by many who had the great pleasure of his company.

What a fellow. (Hadyn was the only person of our generation who used that word. He also used "trousers" when the rest of us said "jeans"). Hadyn was a good pal in high school [Mt View class of '70]. We reconnected at the turn of the century as he was evolving to his new life as a double parent. His beloved children were all he talked about, besides cricket. Swell times. I got tickets for us to see Martha Wainwright opening for Mae Moore; Hadyn's penchant for taking things slowly and sitting around chatting made us arrive just as Martha was done her set. (OK, I finally forgive you.) Sending love and Best Wishes for a Good Grief to family and friends.

Here´s to you cousin.

I so enjoyed the basketball games at UVIC cheering on the Vikes and our conversations over coffee. You will be remembered for your humour, your eloquence, diverse and interesting life, your love of family and for being the consummate gentleman.

I was shocked and so sad to hear of Hadyn´s passing. We went to junior high and high school together in Calgary and were a couple for two of those years. We maintained a friendship and kept in touch for several years. My husband and I were delighted to be seated at the same table for dinner as Hadyn and Wayne a couple of weeks ago on our cruise. Sadly we didn´t have a chance to get together and catch up. I have many wonderful memories of Hadyn and our very special time together. My heartfelt condolences to his children and family.

What a shocking piece of news this morning! We've been friends, even though we rarely saw one another over the years since the early 80s. Our hearts go out to Moira, Evan and Isla. A friend to many, he'll not be forgotten.

What adventures we had my friend. The 'self righteous brothers" Ian, you, me. We laughed till it hurt. I miss you and your laughter, the good times, the pranks, your mischievous grin, fiery debates, and will treasure the good memories you made for us all! Luv ya still, 'bro!! Thanks for all the good times!

Uncle, the thing I never told you ... and boy do I wish now that I did, was how much I admired your career, the fun you had in the media, your zest for life and the stories of peoples lives, big and small. I´ve not met anyone as suave as you in conversation. I will miss your dashing style, fantastic radio voice, and your keen interest in all of our lives. I´m sure you and Gramps are having lovely rounds of golf, and thrifting with GG whenever the mood strikes. I know my dad and many others will miss your encyclopedic knowledge of sports.
Love you Uncle!

I´ll always remember the last time you, me and Evan golfed at Cordova. Your back was in serious pain but you played so well all day. It seemed like you knew that would probably be one of the last times you played golf. Lots of laughs and good shots you beat me on the scorecard and out drove me on 18. I´ll miss you man.

I am saddened to learn of Hadyn!s passing. I was fortunate to work with Hadyn at CJVI when he was News Director. I was hired by he and General Manager Kim Hesketh to do a daily sports editorial. At the time I was vice principal of Arbutus Junior High School and Isla was a student there. Hadyn provided me with complete editorial independence and, while not a direct member of the station´s staff, I valued his support, knowledge and insights in what we were doing.

I was so grateful to meet Hadyn and his brother Wayne a couple of weeks ago on the Nieuw Amsterdam. I heard so many great things about Hadyn from my wife, Jane, who knew Hadyn well in high school. We are in shock hearing of this sad news. My sincere condolences to the family.

It was a gift to reconnect with Hadyn in 2010, after a 40 year hiatus. He was an intelligent, fun, and thoughtful partner. So grateful that we remained firm friends until his tragic passing on April 11 2024.
I came to know Hadyn as a dedicated father, brother and loyal friend to many. Despite a panoply of health issues, Hadyn remained philosophical (" fairness has nothing to do with it") and retained a healthy enthusiasm for all that life brought him.
An absolute delight to have known Hadyn. My sympathies go to Moira, Evan and Isla, and to siblings, Wayne and Vicki. He loved and treasured you all.
