Harry DISBROW Obituary

DISBROW, Harry Lee April 24, 1921 - September 22, 2013 After a rich and full life, this gentleman and gentle man bid us adieu on September 22nd. Predeceased by wife Isabelle in 2000, Harry is survived by daughter Ina Anderson (Brock), and grandchildren Mark (Deidra), Lindsay and Katherine, and daughter Jamie Disbrow (David Downman) and grandson Ian. Also sister Ina, sister-in-law Judy and all loved ones in the Drummond-Hay and Brown/Lowe families. After his childhood in Regina, he spent his formative years in Vancouver. A veteran of WWII who trained across Canada and was stationed in Alaska, Harry studied post-war at UBC and taught at Junior High Schools in Abbotsford, Vernon and in Victoria at Gordon Head and Cedar Hill. He was a proud Oak Bay Kiwanian, took up Tai Chi and French Discussion at Goward House, was active at Shannon Oaks, and was an avid painter with his Broadmead muses. Harry loved languages, music and playing his flute, skiing, cycling, his daily walks, and putting brush to canvas. He would have wanted everyone to pursue uplifting activities of their own choosing, and to appreciate humanity and the beauty of this world. He had a great sense of humour and enjoyed and connected with people in a special way. He understood the importance of good coffee, wine, chocolate, conversation and laughter ~ à la prochaine~. As family, we acknowledge all Dad's great friends, especially Gordon and Mona Mason who brought Mom and Dad together, and loving and gracious Reta Der and her family in recent years. We thank Dr. Layne Woodburn for all he has done. To the many caring people at the Lodge at Broadmead, we cannot put words to our gratitude. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 19th at 1:30 pm at the UVIC INTERFAITH CHAPEL followed by a reception at the University Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to Broadmead Care Society would be gratefully received on Harry's behalf. Condolences may be offered at http://www.McCallBros.com.

Monsieur Disbrow was one of my favourite teachers. I remember him gently but persistently speaking to us in French and his "Enchantee" when introduced to someone. He remembered his students warmly when meeting them on the street or at Willows beach in the Kiwanis cafe. A wonderful man.

Harry was exactly the sort of person to have lived this long. So sweet, so questing. I found his obit by accident and raised my arms in celebration. I'll smile about this for weeks.

Margot Izard, taught with him at Cedar Hill.

As an employee of Goward House, it was my absolute pleasure to have met Harry and had the opportunity to interact with him at Goward House. He was a lovely and charming gentleman. His ready smile will be missed.

I was saddened to read about Mr. Disbrow as he was my French teacher at Cedar Hill many years ago. His quick wit and charm made him popular amongst the students along with his musical interludes and skits. I was fortunate enough to continue corresponding with him each Christmas until a few years ago. I always enjoyed hearing about the variety of activities that he was involved in…....he will be missed.

Jamie and family,
My heart aches for you at this time, I hope you can feel the really big hug I am sending you. Your Dad always seemed like such a patient, peaceful guy. He was a little larger than life when we were all at Cedar Hill School. "Great Memories" hold on to them......

Mr. Disbrow was one of my favourite teachers for German at Cedar Hill in the late 70's. I would see him up until a few years ago in the Gordon Head area and we would still speak in German just for fun. He will be remembered for a long time by many. My condolences to the family.

Jamie and family. Your father was a beautiful artist, with close attention to delicate detail. I can see that was how he presented himself to others in his life. Through the eyes of those that had the pleasure to meet him, he stands in high regard. It is with sadness that I hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to all.

What wonderful memories I have of "Mr Disbrow". He was a wonderful teacher, and one of the few that taught all 8 children of the "Majocha clan". My condolences to his family.
