harry was a really great guy. At Simon Fraser University, he was part of the institution during those formative years.I remember well, when I was Dean of Graduate Studies Pro Tem in 1970, he was a sound source of information, he had good standards and knew how to attain these but yet he was flexible and imaginative.
Just the kind of person that you needed to keep the system on track.
Thanks Harry for being there with us all. You have helped make the university's future solid.

Harry Evans was a gentleman much loved and highly respected by many. To me he was my charming, handsome, intelligent uncle, always a mentor and bastion of support in our family. His kindness and sense of humour were ever present. He will be missed but the precious memories are so very sweet. Another angel is in our midst. Our sincere condolences and love to his family from Corol, Rupee, Jalem and Damon.

Our condolences to Harry's family; he was so special.
Roger of course knew him from S.F.U. but we really knew Peggy and Harry best from our bridge group. One weekend we all stayed at the B&B run by their daughter Susan on Saltspring Island. That was wonderful. The Bridge group also went to the Carlsons place at Point Roberts. When we went to the beach, Peggy did a lovely painting of us all, from behind, walking along together.
We have so many happy memories of them both and will always miss them.

Harry and Peggy were part of our lives almost since the beginning of SFU. We were friends as well as neighbours for many years. He and Roy soldiered on through thick and thin during the "troubles" in the early days of SFU. What a time it was!! He and Roy worked with others in getting SFURA going and of course there was our bridge group which went on for about 40 years, and is still going with eight of us, from various faculties. Such good times--never to be forgotten. He was kind, a gentleman--always organized--had a wonderful smile. We are greatly saddened by his passing. Our thoughts are with his family; Pat, Susan, John and all the others-many grandchildren whom we did not get to know. He will not be forgotten. Our condolences to all, Maureen and Roy Carlson

I'm sad to read of Harry's passing, but I'm happy to remember the six summers I worked for him in the Division of Examinations, the last three (1963-65) as "magistrar". As registrar, Harry was in charge of the operation, and I can say without any doubt that he was the most competent man I ever worked for. He was truly amazing in his commitment to getting the job and done well, and in his ability to anticipate problems and deal with them when they arose. He was friendly, helpful, and fascinating to watch as he rolled a cigarette with one hand. I still don't understand why he was never appointed Deputy Minister of Education, for I never met an abler man. I'm proud to have known Harry, and I extend my condolences to his entire family and especially to Pat, my sometime fellow worker in "the Department", as we called it. Your father was a great man, Pat.

I first met Harry when I went to my first meeting of the Academic Board of BC. Like other new members, I went with a list of complaints about the provincial exams from colleagues. As secretary, Garry was called on first. He quietly listed what he and the Ministry thought was wrong with the exams, including all of our complaints and more, quietly and with good humour setting the tone of the meeting.
Then I discovered that he was said to know the history of every teacher in the province. After hearing him do that for every teacher mentioned, I believed that he did.
When told me that he was considering coming to SFU as registrar, I did everything I could to persaude him to come, and everything I could to make those responsible make him an offer he couldn't refuse. He came and was a tremendous success, always rational, highly knowledgable, good-humoured, and a great colleague.
I was glad to be a friend. Ron Baker, original Academic Planner

Dearest Susan and Ted, Marybeth, Pat and Bruce:
I only had the great privilege of meeting your father once, however, I so remember how welcoming and kind he was during my visit at his home. Clearly, he lived a full and eventful life and had a wonderful warm family, however, it is
always difficult to say goodbye to a loving parent and friend.... Our condolences to you and your families.

While it is never easy to lose a family member there are great memories that can never be erased and I am sure for his family this provides them much comfort.
My wife and I are saddened by the passing of this fine man as we were with Peggy. Their kindnesses at SFU events was always deeply appreciated especially as my wife was not directly involved at SFU as I was.
As a former member of Senate, the Board of Governors, the Student Society council and President of the Alumni Association where I had the good fortune to know and work closely with Harry, I can attest that he had the highest respect of Presidents, administrators, staff, students and alumni.
During the time I was President of the Alumni Association in 1985-87 we immediately recruited Harry to our Alumni board following his retirement as Registrar - where all of us on that board immensely enjoyed his talent, camaraderie and love of Simon Fraser University and its people.
As a member of Senate and committees, if Harry indicated the correct way forward there was never any who would call his judgment or expertise into question.
He came in to the Registrar role in 1968 and cleaned up what was a bit of a challenge in admissions and transfer credit and unlike many big challenges like that where not everyone will be satisfied with the actions of an official I can reflect back and think of no one who had less than praise for his ability to do what was right.
This was a good man who served the university and all its constituency groups with fairness, integrity and did it in a friendly, professional way.
I cannot recall even in the most challenging of circumstances in the turbulent '60s to early '70s where I ever saw Harry lose his calm, collected composure or sense of what was right - nor his sense of humour. I am sure that helped in during those difficult times.

there are many people who pass through our life journey and some of them are so very special...
both Harry and Peggy were wonderfully kind , ...delightful,...gentle,..caring and sharing souls who enriched our lives and generously offered assistance and help in any way needed.
Harry answered any questions I had regarding Roberts rules and protocol in chairing a n meeting when I was on the Port Moody Art Club executive ,,,always with a smile and that twinkle in his eye...and patience galore...
He was a gracious "gentleman" and both my husband Ian and I offer our sincere condolences to all the family.
We treasure the memories we shared, we keep him and Peggy and all of your families in our hearts and prayers.
sincerely. .Louise and Ian Freeman

I have enclosed a poem (see photo gallery) which I believe was written by one of Dad's colleagues about the time he left the Ministry of Education for the Registrar's position at SFU.

A person of "great integrity" and "common sense" and so "well informed" that was Harry alright. My husband and I will also remember him as such a gentlemam and a very dear friend who was always kind and supportive to us. Almost always in a good mood, we will also always remember that laugh he had and his sense of humour. We are so proud to have had him as our friend. He was just one of the best. We have many special memories of him. Years ago Harry and Peggy taught us to play better bridge and invited us to join their bridge group. We had such good times together such as the joy he had making a grand slam on his 70th birthday whilst on holiday with us all. He will always be close to our hearts.

I lived next door to Harry and Peggy on Baker Dr. for many years while raising my sons. They were wonderful neighbours. The way they lived their lives was inspiring to me..I will always treasure the memories.

My condolences to all of you. What wonderful people Harry & Peggy were. When they moved into the neighbourhood, they fit in so well even though the rest of us were younger & had young families. They were so interested in what our kids were up to when they flew the nest. I'm so glad to have such great memories of them and some of Peggy's beautiful paintings hanging in my walls.

Roslyn and I offer our condolences to all of Harry's surviving family. My memories are of a thoughtful, soft spoken gentleman and for some reason I picture him always wearing a sweater of some sort.
