Harry Greenhough Obituary

GREENHOUGH, Harry June 13, 1924 to February 7, 2017 What a wonderful life! Harry Greenhough, born in Bristol, England, arrived in Canada August 1925 and every day he thanked his parents for crossing the big pond. Oh make 'er fast and stow yer gear Leave 'er Harry, leave 'er And tie 'er up to the bloomin pier It's time for you to leave 'er! And leave 'er he did on Tuesday morning, February 7, 2017. Married to Mary, his loving wife, for 69 years, with 5 children, Lynn (Aaron Devor), David (Theresa), Anne (David Price), Ted (Michelle), and Rae, who predeceased him, and whom he loved dearly. Grandchildren Ben Alway (great-grandson Jacob), and Kevin (Julia) and Stephanie Greenhough. Most of his working life, Harry was with British Columbia Forest Products working in Victoria, Youbou, Hammond and Mackenzie. Harry joined the army at the age of 17, serving in Canada, British Isles, Sicily, North Africa and Italy; he was very proud to have been a member of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada. Harry left his mark and enjoyed the companionship of many. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for many years. In the 40's he was with the Salt Spring Island Athletic Club; in the 50's with Sooke District Scouting Movement; in the 60's the Juan de Fuca First swimming pool; in the 70's with the Royal Canadian Legion in Mackenzie; in the 80's and 90's with the C.B.O and finally after moving back to Victoria, with the James Bay New Horizons and then with everyone at Amica on Douglas. Dad was the most wonderful man with an infectious laugh that would draw people near; all the Greenhough cousins will remember Uncle Harry and Uncle Charlie laughing and wheezing, tears streaming down their faces, until they slipped from their chairs to the floor. Dad loved a good story, and would approach anyone on the street and ask them, "And where the hell are you from?" Harry was a prince of a man. He was loved by all his family and friends - and crows - and he will be missed by all who knew him. Dad loved boating and fishing from Sooke to Sitka. We hope he is fishing again soon, with Muggins by his side. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Mount St. Mary Hospital. Graveside service at Hatley Memorial Gardens, old section at 2 pm on Friday, February 10th. Memorial service at Amica on Douglas at 2 pm on Saturday, February 11th.

Dear Mary, Lynn, David, Anne, Ted and family,
May it help to comfort your sorrowing heart to know that we are remembering your family during this difficult time of loss. Dear Harry treated my daughter Julia and I starting on Madrona Drive in 1992, like family with kind words and friendship. He was indeed very special and will be greatly missed.
