From the Canadian War Museum, related to Russ´s medals below:

October 23 marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Hill 355, one of Canada´s key engagements of the Korean War.

A sizable Chinese force raided B Company, 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment positions on 355, an important part of the United Nations´ defensive line. For nearly three weeks leading up to the night of the raid, artillery shells pounded the Canadians on Hill 355. During the night of 23-24 October, a sizable Chinese assault followed an intense barrage of the hillside.

This medal set belonged to Lieutenant Herbert Russell Gardner. A month before the 355 battle, he led a fighting patrol into no-mans-land that resulted in the capture of an enemy prisoner, for which he was awarded the Military Cross.

On the night of the Battle of Hill 355, Gardner was in a forward position defending against the Chinese attack. When Lt. Gardner tried to move his troops to a better position, he was wounded in both legs and in his right arm. Gardner was forced to play dead as Chinese forces passed over his position. Once the threat had diminished, he made his way safely to A Company lines with other wounded Canadian soldiers. A Canadian counterattack and intense friendly artillery fire managed to repel the Chinese attackers, who retreated from the hill´s crest and back to their lines.

Approximately 18 Canadians died in the battle of Hill 355, and 35 were wounded, including Gardner. Another 14 Canadians were taken prisoner and would await the end of the war in captivity in North Korea.

I have many wonderful memories of my uncle Russ that span many, many years. The fun & laughter as our families gathered at Christmas at Gran's or the summer at Cache lake. I had the joy to come & visit him in 2010. He was a very special person to me. Someone I loved, respected & enjoyed. I will always remember him with a smile. I send my cousins & their families my sympathy, condolences & my love.

A Renaissance man..an intellectual, an outdoors-man, leader and hero to his colleagues and family alike, a humourist, sailor, piper and a mentor, father, grandfather and friend.

Russ,forgive me for quoting Patton,
It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived. And so I do thank him.

Thank you for living life on your own terms, it was a pleasure and honour to walk with both you and Kay.

He was my hero, my mentor, my wee father and then a GREAT friend to me...not to be replaced...but forever missed. We had good times, laughed until we could no longer bear it... Talked as equals and shared the mundane in a way only family can...These are what I cling to now, as if for Dear life...the good times, and although the mere thought of him can reduce me to my knees...when I finally get up, I am happy to realize, even though he is gone, I can still feel his effect on me and take comfort in his GREAT capacity to love me.
