We were all saddened to hear of Uncle Herb's passing. We have so many special memories of him when we visited Uncle Herb and Aunt Anna in '96, as well as when they both had visited us. We will miss those visits very much. He was much loved and admired. Our hearts and prayers go out to Aunt Anna and the boys.

I did not have the opportunity or priviledge of getting to know Herb & Anne in my growing up years when I lived in New Brunswick. Circumstances had resulted in my not having much contact with my dad's (Ralph's) family for a lot of years although I thought about them often. By the time I moved to Alberta, 30 years ago, my dad, Alveata, Ralphie & Johnny & I were reconnecting & grew to be very close. I love them all very much. This brought to light that I wanted to reconnect with all of my dad's family. After being in Alberta for several years I finally got the nerve to contact my Uncle Herb & Anne, not sure if they would want to see a niece that their only connection was that I was his brother's daughter.

That was the beginning of many wonderful visits with them at their home as well as at ours. When my husband & I walked into their home for the first time they made us feel so welcome & special & I feel so blessed for every moment that we got to spend with them.

Ten years ago when Herve & I got married, it meant the world to us that you both, Anne & Herb, as well as my cousin Mark, came to Cochrane for our wedding. It made my wedding day all the more special having some of my dad's family there for me.

This past weekend we were honored to be able to be with the Nairn family (my family) to celebrate Herbie's life. You & Anne really touched our lives & I love you both. You will be missed so much by all who knew & loved you Herbie. Anne, Herve & I look forward to many more happy moments with you & Mark, Donny, Michael & Brian & their families.

My best memeries as a kid were going over to Victoria to see Uncle Herb and Aunt Anna. He always had a way of making everyone around him feel important and special. Myself, my brother and my sister didn't really have any family that lived close by and we all developed a very close and special bond with Uncle Herb and Aunt Anna. To us he was like a Grandfather and he always let us know that he was there for us no matter what. He had the type of spirit that was so vibrant that you just felt that he would be around forever. Whenever us kids were over there we didn't have to worry about what Dad said for the time being as he would always tell us,"nevermind what he says, what do you want". We loved it! We all want to let Aunt Anna know that her and Uncle Herb gave us the best memories that will stay with us forever. My only regret is that the generations to come from our family will never get to be blessed with his presence and kindness. We love you Uncle Herb and thank you for everything you did for our family. Chuck, Joanne, Vicky, Chuck and Charmaine.

I don't know what to say , the usual words sound so empty .It was with great saddness that we learned of Uncle Herbs passing . David and I fondly remember visiting Victoria ,in the Fall of 1995 . We were picked up at our hotel by Herb and went to Herb and Anna's home for a wonderful evening of conversation and food .Herb cooked on the BBQ and as I recall there were homemade spirits . We did not always get to visit with Herb and Anna when they came to Saint John ,but during this visit there was a comfort and ease that happens naturally when people relax with one another . There is tremendous saddness to know Herb is no longer with us . I do take comfort knowing Herb is now sharing a laugh with my parents , and other family who have also passed away . Even though miles separate us I hope you know our prayers and thoughts are sent across the miles .

All East Coast Medics express their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Herbie Nairn. We all have great memories of Herbie as a good frind and adviser. I personally enjoyed Herbie as a friend with dedication to the job and service during the four years I spent in the Command Surgeon's office in Esquimalt.

My sister Jeanie and I were discussing how our greatest memories of our Uncle were the visits he made to Halifax with Aunt Anna when we were young girls. We thought he was so good looking and he taught us how to jive. Another great memory was the trip I made with Uncle Ralph and Aunt Alveata when I was 15 to visit Uncle Herb when he was stationed at Petawawa. I recall how excited I was as we drove from Saint John and headed for Ontario. I did some babysitting while there so that the adults could have some free time and I often think of that trip and my fond memories of it. One other memory I have was when Uncle Herb was stationed in Gagetown, N.B. My sister Jeanie and a couple of our best friends had driven up to Fredericton to see our boyfriends who were attending university there and on the way back home that evening, the car we were in hit some black ice and went out of control. I had quite a lump on my forehead as a result refused to continue in the car back to Saint John. The other girls were a bit shaken but wanted to return to Saint John that night. I was adamant I wasn't risking getting back in the car and so we decided we could stay at Uncle Herb's for the night. So we all arrived at Uncle Herb's and stayed the night. Aunt Anna played nurse with the lump on my head by giving me an ice pack and explaining to get it checked out when I got home. That is one of the memories I have when I think of the many trips we made to Fredericton to visit the fellas we dated.

Mom and I were standing in my son's kitchen on Saturday and Mom was telling me that Uncle Herb was coming home this summer and I remember thinking how good it would be to see him and feeling so pleased to hear he was feeling he may be up to the trip. In my mind I thought he may not be able to make the trip but didn't express that feeling to Mom. Within the hour, I received the call from Jeanie informing me of Uncle Herb's sudden passing.

I am very saddened and the way I'm easing the empty feeling inside is in knowing he is no longer suffering and has joined those he loved who went before him. Uncle Herb was a wonderful, thoughtful, kind man and I will miss him and I thank God for giving him to us.

I have always admired he and Aunt Anna's commitment to one another and they were the "perfect example" of what marriage is all about.

Uncle Herb is the second family member we have recently lost. Linda, Aunt Phyll's daughter died suddenly at home from a heart attack 5 weeks ago. She lived just outside Toronto and was a great girl.

In closing, I'd like to send my love and condolences to Aunt Anna, Michael, Brian, Donald and Mark and their families. Even though distance and years have kept our families apart, you are all loved and thought of fondly by your family on the East Coast. Please try to get in touch when you are feeling up to it.

Love Patti
