Ian Fleming Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Ian Fleming of Victoria BC on May 04, 2025. Ian died due to complications of ALS, a disease that quickly weakened his body but not his sense of humor.

Ian was born in Moncton NB and spent his youth in Shediac, Minto and Boiestown NB. He excelled in his educational pursuits obtaining a Bachelor of Science from UNB, Doctor of Medicine from Dalhousie University (Class of 1988) and a Master of Health Sciences from UBC in 2000. He continued to be a life-long learner attending professional development sessions on a regular basis.

Ian spent the majority of his career with the Canadian Forces Health Services. He was a dedicated and highly respected Medical Officer who served in Germany, Ottawa, North Bay, Bosnia, Colorado Springs and retired as the Pacific Regional Surgeon, CFB Esquimalt in 2010. He continued to serve CF members as a civilian physician, worked for a short time with WorkSafeBC and was with Veterans Affairs Canada until the time of his diagnosis in December 2024.

Ian was a world traveler and many of those trips resulted in making new friends or connecting with old ones. He usually returned from his adventures with pieces of art to add to his vast collection and a story about the perils involved with acquiring the piece! He took his last bucket list trip in April, with close friends and his brother Paul aboard the Queen Mary 2 to see the Norwegian fjords.

Ian was generous to a fault. His intellect was sharp and insightful. He had impeccable taste, was a foodie, and enjoyed a glass of good wine.
His great laugh and ability to make others laugh will be missed by all who loved him.

Ian was predeceased by his parents Barbara (McAllister) and Gerald Fleming and his sister Jane. He is survived by his sisters Dr Ann Collins (John), and Mary, his brothers Jim (Dorine), Grant (Jacques), Paul and Michael. He was a devoted uncle to Josh Collins (Keely), Jessica McIntyre (Troy), Julia Collins and Natalie Fleming (Pat). His greatest joy was being a great uncle to Haley and Lauren McIntyre, and Hudson and Campbell Collins. These little ones looked forward to Ian's visits and spoke of him long after he was gone.

Words cannot adequately express how grateful Ian's New Brunswick family is to his "Victoria Family" of friends who surrounded him with love, support, comfort and care during his last journey.

Ian's ashes will be interred in Boiestown NB at a later date. Everyone who knew Ian is asked to remember him by celebrating in their own way. For those who wish, donations to the ALS Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated.

"Mama, the disease that Ian had-do all the best people in the world get it?" Haley McIntyre (8 years old)

Dear Fleming Family,
I was so sorry to hear about this today. Ian and I were classmates and shared a lot of laughs and fun during medical school. When we last chatted I was hoping that I would get a chance to see him when he was in NB. I know how much he loved family and know that he will me missed every day and at every gathering.there really are no words to describe what a wonderful person he was. Please accept our sincere condolences.

I worked with Ian at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. We sat next to each other everyday for the morning briefs. We had many laughs. He was such a caring pragmatic person. Later we would bump into each other walking Dallas Road. He will be very missed indeed.

I am so saddened to hear of Ian´s passing. He was a roomie in med school and we always managed somehow to reconnect every decade or so, most recently last spring at a conference in Victoria. The conversation always picked up as if it were yesterday! Man, I´ll miss his laugh. Safe travels friend.

Ian was in my class in school from grade 6 through to Graduation and was a great teammate on sports teams. He will be missed by many people I'm sure .My condolences to the Fleming Family dealing with this great loss. At our 45th Grad reunion this summer there will be a moment of Silence and we will toast to our departed friend.

I was sad to hear of Ian´s death. We went through medical school together and we shared an apartment in Ottawa during our internship year. I will miss his kindness as well as his sense of humour. I wish he could have enjoyed many more years of travelling the world.
He will be fondly remembered.

My most heartfelt sympathy to Ian's family. Ian and I grew up together in Boiestown and had many happy memories there as well when he attended Medical school at Dalhousie in Halifax. Ian exemplified, charisma, style (throw a burlap bag on him and he looked good), humour and compassion like Ian did. He will be sadly missed by the world.

As his friends and family will attest, Ian cared deeply about the lives of others. With that surpassing quality in mind, we are honouring him by donating to Rainbow Railroad (Canada). May his memory be a blessing.

So sorry for your loss. Such a handsome picture, Ian was just a boy when I saw him last. I have sweet memories of recess at UMES with Ian. Praying for God´s comforting peace to surround you all at this time and in the days ahead.

I first met Ian while stationed in Baden Germany in the late `80s, early `90s. Our paths have crossed several times since, most recently this past November. My fondest memory of Ian is a ski trip to Austria where we would sing renditions from the Sound of Music while on the chairlift. Ian had such a great sense of humour. I am really going to miss our sometimes child like texts. He really was an amazing person and will be missed by so many.
So very sorry for your loss.
RIP Ian

Ian worked for VAC as of 2019 when I first met him - with the intention of hiring him- while we both attended a medical conference in Halifax. Throughout my time as acting manager and beyond, Ian showed interest in and kindness to me. He will be fondly remembered. Sending my sincere condolences to his entire family.

I succeeded Ian as Medical Officer to 3rd Bn, Royal Canadian Regiment in Germany and worked with him at the national military medical headquarters in Ottawa. He was one of the most devoted, intelligent, and skilled physicians and officers I´ve ever known, as well as an exceptionally kind, courteous, compassionate, and sociable gentleman who brought joy to everyone privileged to know him. He´ll be deeply missed by them and by the great many patients who owe him so much. My wife and I offer our profound condolences to his family for the temporary separation from such a virtuous soul who has surely earned a place in Heaven.

Ian was a wonderful generous, intelligent, witty friend...the list goes on and on. We had many great times together while in Germany and later in N. America. Sailing in Greece, Skiing in the Alps, Camping in Jungfrau, bumming around the art galleries in San Francisco etc. and of course...dinning!
Recent years met often in Vancouver/Victoria for dinner or a show/concert. Always much to talk about. RIP my friend, you'll never be forgotten and in our hearts forever. My son talked about Ian all the time also.
