Ian Reid Obituary
Ian J. Reid of North Saanich, BC passed away on December 21, 2023 at age 87.
Ian was born to John and Yvette Reid (Gratton) on November 6, 1936, in Toronto. He graduated from Royal Military College in May 1957 and spent the next 3 years training at the Royal Naval Engineering College in the UK. Ian returned to Canada and completed certificates of competency in both marine and aeronautical engineering, and later his master's degree in mechanical engineering. His Naval service included postings to HMCS Bonaventure as flight deck engineer and HMCS Preserver as engineering officer, Squadron technical officer. Ian also oversaw ship refits including a posting as Officer in charge at the Naval Engineering Test Establishment in Montreal. After serving 31 years in the Navy, Ian worked another 8 years as Coast Guard Chief of Fleet Policy and Planning before retiring to Victoria in 1991. His Naval engineering skills were put to good use in his retirement, as he always owned a well-maintained boat which was well travelled with frequent day trips and several longer journeys every year.
Ian is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Eleanor, his five children, Andrew (Angela), David (Wanda), Barry, Cathy (John), and Brian (Maria), his 8 grandchildren, Michelle, Ian, Harrison, Hudson, Natalia, Claire, Jack and Betty, and his sister Yvette (Gilles). He was predeceased by his granddaughter Meghan. He will be dearly missed.
A private gathering for family and friends will be planned for a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association.

Mes sympathies à Eleanore et à toute la famille pour le décès de votre mari ,père et grand-père. Il était mon cousin Yan. J´ai croisé Yan à quelques reprises lors de ses visites à ma mère, sa Tante Rollande. Elle était bien heureuse lors de ses visites. Repose en paix.

Cher cousin Ian,
Tout le long de ma vie tu as été un modèle pour moi. Au début des années 60, j'avais 10-12 ans quand je suis devenu scout comme toi et l'été, dans les Laurentides, j'ai fait un camp scout au lac Tamaracouta ou tu avais été sacré ''Knight of Tamara'' quelques années au par avant. À mon adolescence je voulais devenir ingénieur comme toi et 15 ans plus tard je t'ai suivi au CMR de St-Jean dont mon père fut un des fondateurs. Venu jeune adulte, moi aussi j'ai pratiqué la voile, t'as même pris la roue de mon voilier sur le St-Laurent à Québec. Tu as toujours exprimé beaucoup de respect pour mon père, Marcel, militaire de carrière et vétéran de la Seconde guerre mondiale. Chaque jours de l'Armistice, le 11 novembre, tu lui téléphonais et même après son décès t'as continué à appeler ma mère, Rollande, le 11 novembre et tu la visitais à sa résidence pour personnes âgées quand tu venais à Ottawa. Après son décès en 2017, j'ai entrepris à mon tour de t'appeler le 11 novembre mais tu avais trop de difficultés à m'entendre, une chance que Éléonore était là. J'ai beaucoup apprécié quand Andrew, ton fils ainé, m'a présenté tes condoléances aux funérailles de ma mère à Hull. Vous avez toujours été proche de notre famille, ma soeur Lyse est la marraine de Brian et moi le parrain de Catherine-Louise. Quand on étaient petits on aimaient tellement les biscuits au beurre d'arachide que ta mère, tante Yvette, nous faisait quand elle venait à Ville d'Anjou nous gardés les 7 enfants. Quand oncle John, ton père, est devenu trop vieux pour conduire, c'est moi qui a acheté son vieux Dodge Corona. On a passé plusieurs Jour de l'an tous ensemble avec la petite Yvette et Gilles Charette. Je garde aussi un bon souvenir de ma visite quand vous habitiez au PMQ à Ste-Foy et qu'Éléonore m'avait fait découvrir la musique de Gilles Vigneau qu'elle appréciait particulièrement. Enfin je suis reconnaissant à notre cousin Wayne Gratton qui, il y a quelques jours, nous informait que tu nous avais quitté pour un monde meilleur ce 21 décembre 2023. I am truly grateful for all the memories I have with Grandpa. My most cherished memories are sailing and playing golf together. Grandpa has helped shape me into the person I am today. I will miss him dearly, especially speaking French with him. He is in my thoughts and prayers.

Some of the best times I spent with Dad were on the island of Maui. He was happy there, enjoying the Warm weather, Golfing, snorkeling, and relaxing. One of my best memories was a golf game at Kapalua golf course with Dad, Michelle and Ian.

Ian,
My amazing Grandfather taught me so much even in the short times I could visit. Taught me to sail, how to navigate via nautical miles. How to read a map properly and how to catch, cook and clean crabs. He showed me how to take care of plants, respect wildlife and create long lasting relationships.
I have many memories with him and will always cherish them.
